Sonic the Hedgehog is part of this year’s free comic celebrations, with two IDW releases available across Free Comic Book Day 2026 and Comics Giveaway Day 2026.
This year’s event is a little different from usual. Free Comic Book Day and Comics Giveaway Day are being held at the same time, with different distributors and publishers involved. For readers, the main idea remains the same: participating comic shops will offer select free comics, though availability and store rules may vary by location.
For Sonic fans, one of the key releases is DC X Sonic The Hedgehog #1 Special Edition from DC Comics. The issue is a reprint of the first DC x Sonic crossover, arriving just ahead of the next series, DC x Sonic the Hedgehog: The Metal Legion, which launches on May 6, 2026.
The special edition gives readers another chance to pick up the opening chapter of the crossover between Sonic and DC’s heroes before the sequel begins. The original DC x Sonic story brought the two universes together in a fast-paced adventure, and The Metal Legion will continue that collaboration with a new threat involving mysterious mechanical rings linking both worlds.

IDW is also offering Comics Giveaway Day – Sonic The Hedgehog #1, a reprint of the first issue from IDW’s ongoing Sonic the Hedgehog comic series. Written by Ian Flynn with art by Tracy Yardley, the issue serves as an easy entry point for readers who want to jump into IDW’s Sonic comics from the beginning. The story features Sonic and Tails on a fast, lighthearted adventure, making it a strong pick for new readers and longtime fans alike.
Both Sonic releases are reprints, but they serve different purposes. DC X Sonic The Hedgehog #1 Special Edition helps set the stage for The Metal Legion, while Sonic The Hedgehog #1 gives readers a starting point for IDW’s main Sonic comic run.
As always, Free Comic Book Day and Comics Giveaway Day books are free for readers, but not for comic shops. Stores pay for the books they hand out, so fans who are able to support their local comic shop with a purchase are encouraged to do so.
