Thundercat and GRAMMY-winning arranger Button Masher have teamed up for “Moving at Light Speed,” a brand-new song celebrating Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th anniversary, released on October 7 through Brainfeeder.
The track combines Thundercat’s distinctive falsetto vocals with Button Masher’s energetic blend of jazz, chiptune and electronic music, incorporating familiar Sonic game sound effects into its production. At just 1 minute and 47 seconds, it’s a short but lively collaboration between two musicians with a shared love for video games.
Button Masher, whose real name is Jake Silverman, has built much of his musical career around bringing jazz and video game music together. He also released his album Super Button Masher through Brainfeeder in September, making this Sonic collaboration another addition to his recent work.
An official visualizer accompanies the single, which is available now on streaming and digital music platforms.
The song arrives just ahead of Club Chaos: A Sonic 35th Celebration, where Thundercat will perform on October 9 at 9:30 PM ET, alongside a musical lineup featuring Tee Lopes and Austin Millz. The event takes place at Elsewhere in Brooklyn, New York, with a livestream beginning at 7:30 PM ET through Sonic’s official Twitch and YouTube channels. Sonic City has previously covered the event’s full lineup and activities.
Thundercat’s involvement with Sonic has been growing throughout the anniversary year. During his visit to SEGA headquarters in Japan, he showed up wearing Shadow-inspired clothing and carrying a custom gold bass decorated with Super Sonic artwork, before meeting with Sonic Creative Director Kazuyuki Hoshino and Sonic Sound Director Tomoya Ohtani. The visit is also featured in a McGuffin video exploring SEGA headquarters and the music of the series.
“Moving at Light Speed” is available to stream now, with high-quality digital downloads also offered through Thundercat’s Bandcamp.
