Sonic the Hedgehog Is Joining IDW’s Horror Lineup in 2027

Earlier this year, Sonic’s contribution to IDW Goes Dark amounted to a spooky variant cover. In 2027, IDW is taking things quite a bit further.

Sonic the Hedgehog is among the franchises getting a brand-new horror comic as IDW expands its horror publishing throughout 2027, joining Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Godzilla, Star Trek and, somehow, Hello Kitty. The plans were revealed in an October 5 exclusive from Fangoria ahead of New York Comic Con.

IDW has not yet revealed the Sonic comic’s title, creative team, format or release date, but Senior Group Editor Jake Thomas directly included Sonic while discussing the publisher’s next round of horror projects, saying he was excited about “bringing the horror vibes over to TMNT, Godzilla, and Sonic.”

That makes this a considerably different proposition from the IDW Goes Dark Sonic the Hedgehog #91 variant Sonic City covered in June. That campaign spread horror-themed covers across IDW’s wider publishing slate without changing the stories inside, and we noted at the time that Sonic itself was not becoming a horror comic. The new 2027 project goes beyond the cover and brings the series into the genre proper.

Thomas says the appeal is in putting familiar properties through what he describes as a “horror funhouse mirror,” with genre touchstones adapted to worlds that fans already know. IDW Senior Group Editor Heather Antos similarly says the expansion will push established characters and settings into places they have not previously gone.

Exactly what that looks like for Sonic is still under wraps. IDW has not said whether the project will be a one-shot, miniseries or something larger, nor which characters or corner of the Sonic universe it will use. Fangoria says more details on the publisher’s 2027 horror slate are still to come as IDW heads into New York Comic Con.

For Sonic, though, the big change is already clear: IDW Goes Dark is no longer stopping at a variant cover. Sonic is getting an actual horror story in 2027.
