Sonic’s 35th anniversary has turned into a major school-holiday campaign across Australia, with shopping centres hosting free games, photo activities, character appearances and a competition offering one fan a private visit from Sonic himself.
Several QIC shopping centres are taking part in the campaign, including Pacific Werribee, Castle Towers, Eastland, Pacific Epping, Watergardens and Canberra Centre, with individual centres running their own Sonic activities throughout September and October.

The biggest prize gives one winner a Sonic the Hedgehog mascot appearance at a birthday party or private event valued at up to A$15,000. The package includes Sonic, an event host, a three-hour appearance and travel expenses for both. Castle Towers, Eastland and Pacific Epping are among the centres currently promoting the competition.
The anniversary campaign also includes free activities inside the shopping centres. At Pacific Werribee, visitors can take part in Sonic gaming, interactive photo opportunities and family activities from September 21 through October 4, between 11 AM and 3 PM. Sonic meet-and-greets are scheduled for September 23 and September 30.
Castle Towers will run its own Sonic area from September 28 through October 11, with free games and photo activities. Sonic and Amy Rose are also scheduled for meet-and-greets there on October 6 and 7.
Other QIC centres are joining in as well. Watergardens is running free Sonic gaming and interactive activities from September 21 through October 4, while Pacific Epping is hosting its own 35th anniversary campaign with games, photo opportunities and Sonic and Amy appearances. Eastland is similarly advertising free Sonic activities, character appearances and the A$15,000 competition.
At Grand Central, the celebration runs from September 21 to 29 and includes a large Sonic activity area with a 2.9-metre Sonic figure, Ring Toss, Sonic gaming, art activities and photo opportunities.
The campaign is another unusually physical part of Sonic’s 35th anniversary celebrations, bringing the character into shopping centres rather than limiting the anniversary to games, merchandise or online promotions. For one Australian fan, it could even end with Sonic turning up at their own birthday party.
