One of the more ambitious Sonic crossover fan games has reached an abrupt end only weeks after finally arriving at its Season 1 release.

4CYDE Studios has shut down SEGA VS CAPCOM: The Next Level, the fan-made 2v2 fighting game that brought Sonic together with characters from across SEGA and Capcom. In a statement posted September 3, the developer said the project was discontinued because of its use of Capcom characters and likenesses, while stressing that this was the reason for the shutdown and not some separate issue surrounding the game.

“With any fan game, that’s the risk and we have no regrets making the game happen.”

The team thanked everyone involved and said it was glad the project at least managed to reach its Season 1 release before being pulled. Downloads have since been removed, although videos showing the game in action remain online. 4CYDE has also described the project as a learning experience that it hopes to carry into future original games.

That Season 1 release had only arrived on August 7, following years of public development and earlier playable builds. The finished roster contained ten fighters split evenly between the two companies: Sonic, Vyse, Sakura Shinguji, Axel Stone and Beat represented SEGA, while Ryu, X, Linn Kurosawa, Batsu Ichimonji and Morrigan represented Capcom. Shadow the Hedgehog had also been teased for a future addition before development came to an end.

Sonic had been central to the project from much earlier than Season 1. The first public demo paired him with Mega Man X as its only two playable fighters, before later beta builds gradually expanded the roster and mechanics. By May 2025, the game had grown into a six-character build with Sonic, X, Ryu, Akira, Axel and Batsu among its playable lineup.

The eventual Season 1 build went considerably further, offering Arcade, local Versus, online Versus with rollback netcode and Practice modes. Its combat drew heavily from Capcom’s history of crossover fighters, combining 2v2 tagging with mechanics inspired by games such as Marvel vs. Capcom, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, Capcom vs. SNK 2 and Street Fighter III.

Importantly, there is currently no indication that SEGA asked for the Sonic or other SEGA characters to be removed. 4CYDE’s public explanation specifically points to the Capcom side of the crossover, and a developer from BluBoyZero who had been collaborating on the game’s next version separately stated that Capcom, not SEGA, was behind the action. The actual legal correspondence has not been published publicly, so the safest description remains the one provided by those involved rather than speculating about additional demands.

That distinction is particularly relevant for Sonic fan projects, where SEGA has historically allowed a substantial community scene to exist around unofficial games. Nothing about this shutdown suggests a broader change in SEGA’s approach to Sonic fangames.

For SEGA VS CAPCOM, though, the crossover itself appears to be over. 4CYDE ended its statement with a “stay tuned,” and has made clear that it does not view the years spent building the fighter as wasted time. Whatever comes next, Sonic’s latest unofficial bout with Capcom’s roster managed to make it all the way to a full Season 1 before the bell finally rang.
