We are now less than seven months away from Sonic the Hedgehog 4, and somehow Paramount is still keeping the actual movie remarkably close to its chest.
Amy Rose and Metal Sonic were introduced at the end of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, the returning cast has been assembling for the sequel and the film is scheduled to hit theaters on March 19, 2027, but we are still waiting for the first proper trailer. In the meantime, however, something considerably less glamorous may have started giving away a few clues: toy and book listings.
A collection of apparently premature JAKKS Pacific Sonic the Hedgehog 4 listings recently appeared through Smyths Toys before being removed. The original product pages now redirect back to the retailer rather than displaying their contents, but their titles were captured while they were live. The lineup included Sonic with a Chaos Emerald, Amy with her Hammer, Metal Sonic with a Blaster, an “Arm,” a Sonic and Tails two-pack, Light-Up Sonic, Light-Up Shadow, a 9-inch Sonic Feature Figure and a 2.5-inch “Neo San Fran” Multipack. The surviving Smyths URL for the Shadow figure still contains the product name “Sonic 4 Movie 5 Fig Light Up Shadow,” although the page itself now redirects away.
Most of those are exactly the sort of things you would expect from a new Sonic movie range. Sonic has a Chaos Emerald. Amy has a hammer. Metal Sonic apparently comes armed. Light-Up Shadow, though, is a little more interesting. Shadow surviving the third movie has never exactly been a secret, but a dedicated light-up figure certainly suggests JAKKS expects him to have enough of a presence in Sonic 4 to warrant another major release alongside the new cast.
That is particularly curious given the separate rumor from Daniel Richtman that surfaced this week claiming Shadow will appear as a knight wielding Arondight from Sonic and the Black Knight, as part of a story involving either time travel or multiverse travel. The toy listing does not confirm any of that, and “light-up” could mean anything from an illuminated effect to some kind of powered-up appearance, so we would not treat the two reports as corroborating each other. It does, however, give us another reason to expect Shadow to be more than a post-credits footnote in the fourth movie.
The strangest listing is easily “Neo San Fran.”
A 2.5-inch multipack built around something called Neo San Fran sounds like a location rather than a character, and “San Fran” is not exactly difficult to decode. What the Neo part means is another question entirely. With Amy and Metal Sonic already pulling Sonic 4 toward Sonic CD territory, it is tempting to wonder whether this could represent some kind of altered or future version of San Francisco, perhaps even the movie’s answer to the game’s Bad Future concept.
But that is absolutely speculation.
The listing itself tells us nothing beyond the name “Neo San Fran Multipack.” There are no surviving product images or descriptions establishing what the set contains, what the location actually is, or whether time travel has anything to do with it. For now, it is simply a very interesting name attached to an unannounced movie toy.
The publishing side gives us considerably more concrete material. Six tie-in books for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 have also appeared in publishing catalogues, including the 224-page Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Official Movie Novelization and two releases centered specifically on Amy Rose: the 24-page Meet Amy Rose! and a 64-page Untitled Amy Chapter Book. The remaining listings consist of Sonic’s Guide to Friends at 24 pages, a 16-page Sticker & Activity Book and an 18-page Untitled MTI Picture Book.
That amount of Amy-specific material is probably the least surprising reveal here, but it does reinforce how heavily Paramount appears to be positioning her for the new movie. Amy already received the big reveal in Sonic 3’s ending, and giving her both a dedicated introductory book and a separate chapter book suggests the film’s merchandising campaign will be treating her as one of Sonic 4’s major new attractions rather than simply another member of the ensemble.
Most of the books are currently listed for February 2, 2027, giving younger readers a chance to meet the movie’s characters shortly before release. The Untitled Amy Chapter Book and Official Movie Novelization are instead dated March 19, the same day Sonic the Hedgehog 4 opens in theaters. Holding the full novelization until release day certainly makes sense if Paramount would rather not have the entire plot sitting on bookstore shelves several weeks early.
None of these products have been formally announced by Paramount, SEGA or JAKKS Pacific, and the disappearance of the Smyths toy pages is another good reason not to treat every product name as immutable final information. Retailer listings can change before release, placeholder names can be replaced and merchandise sometimes reflects concepts differently from the finished movie.
Still, this is our first substantial glimpse at what the Sonic the Hedgehog 4 merchandise rollout may look like, and “Neo San Fran” is going to be particularly difficult to ignore until somebody explains what on Earth it means.
Or perhaps what future Earth it means.
