Sonic the Hedgehog 4 may be reaching considerably further into the series’ history than anyone expected.
According to a new report from entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, also known as DanielRPK, the fourth Sonic movie will feature either time travel or multiverse travel, with Richtman noting that his information does not make it clear which of the two is involved. Even more surprisingly, the report claims Shadow will appear as a knight wielding Arondight, the sword associated with his counterpart in 2009’s Sonic and the Black Knight. The information was originally shared through Richtman’s Patreon on August 21 and has since begun circulating publicly.

And yes, that second detail immediately makes the multiverse possibility particularly interesting.
In Sonic and the Black Knight, Shadow himself does not simply wander into Camelot and pick up a sword. The game takes place within an Arthurian storybook world populated by characters who resemble members of Sonic’s cast, with Shadow represented by Sir Lancelot, one of King Arthur’s Knights of the Round Table. Lancelot wields the Sacred Sword Arondight, a weapon said to never lose its edge and one of the swords Sonic collects during his adventure. SEGA’s own soundtrack even specifically pairs Lancelot’s appearance with the later acquisition of Arondight.

If Richtman’s wording is literal, then, a knight version of Shadow carrying that specific sword sounds considerably more deliberate than simply giving the movie universe’s Shadow medieval armor. It could point toward Sonic the Hedgehog 4 borrowing the basic idea behind Sir Lancelot and introducing some kind of alternate Shadow. That would fit naturally with a multiverse story, but it remains an inference for now. Richtman does not explicitly say this is a different Shadow from the one introduced in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, nor does he definitively say that the movie uses a multiverse rather than time travel.
That distinction is especially important because Keanu Reeves is officially returning as Shadow in the fourth movie. Paramount and SEGA have not revealed what Shadow is doing in the story, so Reeves could simply be voicing the established movie Shadow in a radically different situation, an alternate version of him, or potentially both if the rumored plot really does start playing with different timelines or worlds.
There is at least some existing reason to keep an eye on time-related ideas. Sonic City noted when the first Sonic the Hedgehog 4 teaser arrived that its imagery left plenty of room for speculation surrounding time and alternate timelines, while the movie is already drawing directly from Sonic CD through the arrival of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic. More concrete information followed in May, when a copyright preregistration provided the first official story description, stating that Sonic will be joined by Amy while facing “a new technological nemesis known as Metal Sonic.” That remains the only officially documented plot setup we have right now.
The alleged Black Knight connection would therefore be something entirely new. And it would be a fairly deep cut for the movie series. Sonic and the Black Knight sent Sonic into the world of King Arthur and recast several familiar characters as members of its mythology, including Shadow as Lancelot, Knuckles as Gawain and Blaze as Percival. Seeing even part of that concept make its way into a theatrical Sonic movie would be one of the more unexpected game references Paramount and SEGA have attempted so far.
For now, though, none of this has been confirmed by Paramount or SEGA. Richtman’s report should be treated strictly as a rumor until official footage, promotional material or further reporting establishes that time travel, the multiverse or Arondight actually appear in the movie. Paramount currently confirms only that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is headed to theaters on March 19, 2027, with Amy, Metal Sonic, Shadow and the wider returning cast involved.
Still, if somebody told us a few years ago that the fourth Sonic movie might contain Keanu Reeves’ Shadow running around with Sir Lancelot’s sword, that probably would have gone fairly low on the prediction list.
