A Sonic fan has created a custom Sonic the Hedgehog 2 controller prototype that turns the classic Spin Dash into a physical feedback feature.

The project was shown by Dr_BrownBR on r/SEGAGENESIS, where a short clip demonstrates the in-progress controller reacting to Sonic’s Spin Dash in real time. The idea is to make the gamepad provide force feedback while playing Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with an internal motor spinning left and right to match Sonic’s movement on the 2D plane.

The controller also includes a small screen on top that acts as a visual Spin Dash charge meter, giving players another way to track the build-up before launching Sonic forward.

The prototype is still in an early state. In the footage, the controller’s internal parts are exposed, and its face buttons are currently bare microswitches. Dr_BrownBR says a second part of the project is already in development and has asked for feedback and suggestions from other fans.

One unusual design choice is the use of a joystick instead of a traditional D-pad. Since Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was originally built around digital controls on the SEGA Genesis and Mega Drive, some fans have questioned how practical the joystick will be for quick 2D platforming movement. Dr_BrownBR described it as a matter of personal preference.

At the moment, the controller appears to be working with Sonic the Hedgehog 2 through a PC emulator rather than original Genesis or Mega Drive hardware. Bringing the concept to real hardware would likely be more complicated, since the original controller port was not designed to power features like a motorized feedback system or built-in display.

The concept could potentially be expanded beyond Sonic the Hedgehog 2 if development continues, especially since later releases such as Sonic Mania and Sonic Origins also feature Spin Dash-style mechanics.

For now, the custom Sonic 2 controller remains a fan-made prototype, but it is a creative example of how classic Sonic gameplay can still inspire new hardware experiments more than three decades later.
