Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, the first new Sonic racing game in over five years, is now available on all major platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch. However, players on Nintendo Switch 2 will have to wait a little longer, as a dedicated version of the game is planned for release during the Christmas 2025 season.

Although the current Switch version is backward compatible with Nintendo’s next-generation hardware, SEGA is taking extra time to ensure that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds makes the most of the Switch 2’s new capabilities. A physical Switch 2 edition is also in development, scheduled for early 2026, and will include the full game on cartridge rather than a download key.

In an interview with Traxion, Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka explained why the Switch 2 release will arrive later than other platforms:

“We wanted to release the Switch 2 version at the same time [as other platforms],” Iizuka said. “But because the console’s release date was later, we wanted to make sure we could provide a game that optimised the new console.”

While both Switch versions will share the same characters, tracks, gadgets, and Travel Ring mechanics, Iizuka clarified that the Switch 2 edition will feature enhanced visuals and performance.

“It won’t be a 100% replica because of the differences in the hardware specs,” he noted. “When you look at the content that will be provided, there’s no difference between the Switch 1 and Switch 2 games.”

Though he stopped short of confirming specific targets like 4K resolution or 60fps, Iizuka stated that the Switch 2 release will “use the full capability of the console.”

Maintaining cross-play parity across all systems was also a major focus for Sonic Team:

“For all consoles, we want to make sure we can provide the best resolution and frame rate based on the specs of the console,” Iizuka explained. “Cross-play is one of the key features. When you play cross-play, it’s important for people to get the same level of experience, no matter what console they are using.”

Iizuka also acknowledged that optimizing the game for older hardware like the original Switch, PS4, and Xbox One was “very difficult,” especially with the game’s dynamic Travel Ring system that lets players shift between environments mid-race.

“It won’t be 100% the same presentation in terms of visuals,” he said. “However, we wanted to make sure the experience that users get will not differ.”

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is out now on PC, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with the Switch 2 version racing onto shelves later this year.
