This fall, IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog comic is hitting the reset button with a brand new story arc titled The Stage Is Set, starting with issue #81 in September. Whether you’re a longtime reader or completely new to the series, this arc is designed to be a perfect jumping-on point—and it looks like things are about to get flashy.
The story centers on a frantic search for the last remaining Chaos Emerald. With six of them missing, Sonic and Tails trace the trail to Sequin, a dazzling metropolis in the middle of hosting a massive carnival. But they aren’t the only ones chasing emeralds—Shadow and Rouge are hot on the trail as well, setting the stage for high-stakes tension and maybe a few high-flying acrobatics.
Adding even more intrigue to the mix is a mysterious new character who’s already raising eyebrows. Described by IDW as “adorable, acrobatic, and totally not suspicious,” the newcomer appears to be themed around a harlequin jester, fitting in all too well with Sequin’s festive (and possibly deceptive) vibe. While we don’t yet know this character’s name or true intentions, alternate covers for issue #81 give us a glimpse—and they’re sure to spark fan theories.

The upcoming three-issue arc is penned by fan-favorite writer Evan Stanley with art from Min Ho Kim. IDW and SEGA are positioning this as an entry point for fresh readers, echoing comments from SEGA of America’s Michael Cisneros:
“Issue 81 is a fantastic spot for new readers to jump into the series! This issue kicks off an all-new arc that is packed with fun and surprises for Sonic and friends.”
It’s also worth noting that IDW originals like Tangle and Whisper have already crossed over into Sonic’s gaming world before, appearing in Sonic Forces: Speed Battle. Could this mysterious jester be the next IDW character to go from panel to playable? Only time will tell.
The Stage Is Set begins with Sonic the Hedgehog #81, arriving September 3, 2025.
Stay tuned to Sonic City for more comic previews, covers, and behind-the-scenes details as we get closer to launch.

Hope we get an IDW comic book for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds prior to the game’s launch. As a longtime Sonic fan, I would love to see that become a reality.
