A classic rivalry is heading to the big screen in 2027 as SEGA and Nintendo prepare to go head-to-head at the box office. Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is set to launch into theaters on March 19, while the newly announced live-action The Legend of Zelda will follow just a week later on March 26. While these two iconic franchises have long since put their console wars behind them, this cinematic showdown is shaping up to be the next big battleground.

Sonic already has a strong lead going into this face-off. The film series has built a dedicated audience with three successful movies and a spin-off show, and it shows no signs of slowing down. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 grossed $462 million and famously held the top box office spot over Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King during its opening week. With the franchise now surpassing the $1 billion global mark and teasing new fan-favorite characters in its post-credit scenes, there’s already significant hype surrounding the fourth chapter.
One key advantage for Sonic is familiarity. Audiences know what to expect from these films—fast-paced action, heartfelt moments, and a family-friendly tone that appeals to all ages. The return of familiar faces like Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik is also a strong draw.
In contrast, The Legend of Zelda remains something of a mystery. Nintendo has yet to confirm whether the film will aim for a broader audience or skew older. While director Wes Ball (The Maze Runner, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes) is a promising pick, and the Zelda universe holds massive potential, we still don’t know what direction the film’s story will take.
That said, Nintendo has its own powerful trump card. The Legend of Zelda is one of the most beloved and respected franchises in gaming history, and its cinematic debut is riding the momentum of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned a staggering $1.3 billion worldwide. The Zelda series has decades of critically acclaimed titles to draw from, including Ocarina of Time, Twilight Princess, and Breath of the Wild. Even without a direct adaptation, the film has a wealth of lore and characters to explore.
When it comes to who will win, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently the safer bet. It’s a proven success with an established tone and audience, and it’ll have a one-week head start at the box office. But Zelda’s name carries enormous weight, and curiosity alone could drive fans to theaters. If Nintendo nails the execution, it could easily pull off another Mario-level success.
No matter who comes out on top, it’s clear that 2027 is shaping up to be a milestone year for video game movies. Both films have the chance to deliver something special, and whether you’re Team Sonic or Team Zelda, fans are in for a win either way.
