The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise has grown into a cinematic success story, blending its iconic non-human characters with human counterparts to craft its unique world. However, with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 significantly reducing the human cast’s screen time compared to earlier installments, speculation is mounting about whether future films might forgo human characters entirely.
Colleen O’Shaughnessey, the voice behind Tails, shared her perspective in an interview with Screen Rant during the digital release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3. While acknowledging the potential for a Sonic movie focused solely on non-human characters, she praised the balance achieved in the latest installment.
“Is it possible? Absolutely,” O’Shaughnessey remarked. “You could do something with just the characters in this world. But I feel like this last movie, they did such a great job of balancing the two. If they continue on their pattern, my guess is they’ll keep doing that. … It definitely takes it out of a video game and really helps ground it into a more real-world situation, if that makes sense.”
The Sonic films have progressively shifted their narrative focus away from human characters. In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Tom Wachowski (James Marsden) and Maddie Wachowski (Tika Sumpter) had significantly reduced roles compared to earlier films. Instead, the spotlight shifted to the non-human ensemble—Sonic (Ben Schwartz), Tails, Knuckles (Idris Elba), and Shadow (Keanu Reeves)—showcasing the franchise’s core video game roots.
This trajectory might continue in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, especially following the apparent death of Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey), the series’ most prominent human antagonist. Without Robotnik, the fourth film has an opportunity to fully explore Sonic’s world and characters without relying on human-driven storylines.
While O’Shaughnessey admitted she is not involved in the creative decision-making process, the diminishing prominence of human characters opens exciting possibilities for Sonic the Hedgehog 4. With its projected release in Spring 2027, the upcoming film could delve deeper into Sonic’s universe, showcasing beloved characters and settings from the games.
Ultimately, the franchise’s direction will depend on audience reception to the current balance between human and non-human elements. For now, O’Shaughnessey believes the formula is working: “They really did a great job of balancing [the characters]. … Could they keep adding more and more characters? For sure, there’s definitely enough characters to go around.”
As fans eagerly await the next chapter in Sonic’s cinematic journey, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 promises to bring more action, humor, and heart while continuing to expand the Sonic universe.

Sorry, but this is just ridiculous.
Sonic’s relationship with Tom is the heart of these movies. And Tom and Maddie became Sonic’s adoptive parents.
Millions of people love the finding family trope their relationship, especially Sonic and Tom’s relationship. And we saw how important Tom is to Sonic in the third movie.
It would be a terrible mistake to get rid of them. A terrible mistake! It would ruin everything they worked so hard to build in these three movies and what made them special.
We love the human characters, especially Tom and Maddie. We want them in all the Sonic movies, until the end!
