Scott Pilgrim creator Bryan Lee O’Malley is returning to the series with a new comic introducing a robotic counterpart that draws clear inspiration from Sonic the Hedgehog’s Metal Sonic.
Oni Press has announced Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott, a 24-page one-shot scheduled to release on November 11, 2026.
The comic marks O’Malley’s first new Scott Pilgrim story since the original graphic novel series concluded in 2010.
Dawn of Metal Scott will serve as a prequel to the upcoming Scott Pilgrim EX beat-’em-up game. Its main 16-page story follows Scott as he encounters and battles a new mechanical doppelganger known as Metal Scott.
Early preview pages show the mysterious figure watching Scott from the rooftops before launching himself through the air in a bright streak of light.
Metal Scott retains Scott’s hairstyle, jacket collar, and general appearance, but replaces his face and body with dark mechanical armor, glowing yellow eyes, metallic joints, and large circular components around his ears and knees.
The concept closely mirrors Metal Sonic’s role as a robotic duplicate created to rival Sonic, and although neither O’Malley nor Oni Press has explicitly described Metal Scott as a direct Metal Sonic parody, the cover for the comic is a clear homage to the classic Sonic CD key and box art.
The Scott Pilgrim series has always incorporated references to video games, and the new character continues that tradition through his name, robotic design, high-speed entrance, and position as a mechanical counterpart to the protagonist.
The one-shot will also include previously unseen extras connected to Scott Pilgrim EX.
O’Malley said he agreed to create the comic without initially considering that it would become his first new Scott Pilgrim story in 16 years.
“It’s only a trifle, but returning to Scott’s Toronto really did feel like coming home,” O’Malley said.
Scott Pilgrim EX: Dawn of Metal Scott will arrive at comic book stores on November 11.
