Sonic the Hedgehog is racing into another crossover, this time joining forces with Supercell’s chaotic multiplayer action game Squad Busters. Starting June 17, players can take part in a limited-time event featuring Sonic, Tails, Knuckles, and classic elements from the Sonic franchise. The collaboration will run until July 7.

Sonic appears as a playable Hero character, while Tails and Knuckles join as Support characters. Each character features signature abilities pulled straight from their mainline appearances:

Sonic transforms into Super Sonic with his Power Move, granting temporary invincibility while boosting the squad’s movement and attack speed. Tails flies into battle using his Cyclone mech, firing lasers and tossing wrenches. Knuckles dives underground to avoid damage and collect loot, then emerges with a powerful Spiral Upper attack.

The event also introduces a Green Hill Zone-themed map, complete with a boss battle against Dr. Eggman in his Death Egg Robot. Familiar badniks like Buzz Bombers and Crabmeats appear as stage hazards, and classic item boxes return to power up your squad mid-match.

To mark the occasion, Supercell released a retro-styled magazine cover evoking the look of 90s gaming magazines. It features Sonic alongside Squad Busters stars like Barbarian King and Archer Queen.

Johnathan Rowlands, game lead for Squad Busters, shared his enthusiasm for the crossover:

Our game team comprises people from different generations and cultural backgrounds, yet one of the many things we have in common is we all spent our formative years exploring the likes of Green Hill Zone or humming the Sonic the Hedgehog soundtrack on the way to school. If you look at the footprint the Sonic franchise has left on so many fans worldwide like myself, it’s phenomenal. So it’s a privilege for us as fans to bring Sonic, Tails and Knuckles into the colourful world of Squad Busters and pit them alongside – or against – the likes of the Barbarian King or Archer Queen!

Sonic Team’s Takashi Iizuka also commented on the partnership:

I’ve been a longtime player of Supercell games, so I’m truly excited that the collaboration between Sonic and Squad Busters has become a reality. Not only Sonic, but also Tails and Knuckles bring their unique personalities to the battlefield, making team battles even more fun. I hope fans of both Squad Busters and Sonic around the world will enjoy this incredible collaboration.

With fast-paced team gameplay, deep squad customization, and Sonic flair woven throughout, this crossover is shaping up to be one of the blue blur’s most unexpected and entertaining appearances this year.

Download Squad Busters on iOS or Android and join the event before it ends on July 7.
