SEGA Sammy has released its earnings report for the fiscal year ending March 2025, and Sonic the Hedgehog stood out as one of the company’s most valuable IPs across multiple business segments.
According to SEGA’s official financial statements and investor presentation, Sonic played a central role in boosting the operating income of the company’s Entertainment Contents Business. This growth came from three key areas: video game sales, animation success, and explosive licensing revenue.
In gaming, SEGA noted strong performance from repeat full game sales and downloadable content. Sonic X Shadow Generations was specifically mentioned among the IPs with consistent sales results, contributing to the high-margin performance of SEGA’s Consumer segment.
Animation was another highlight. The report credited “the success of animation works from the Sonic series” as a significant factor in the segment’s year-over-year growth, referencing the Knuckles spin-off series on Paramount+ and other digital content.
Sonic’s biggest financial boost came from the big screen. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was confirmed to have grossed $490 million globally during its theatrical run, marking a franchise high and a major win for SEGA’s transmedia strategy.

On the licensing front, SEGA reported a 140% year-over-year increase in licensing revenue. Sonic was a key driver of that growth and was recognized as a 3-star IP in Walmart’s Entertainment Council Program—an elite status reserved for top-tier media franchises.
Looking ahead, SEGA is continuing its Sonic expansion with several new projects. These include Sonic Rumble, a free-to-play multiplayer game launching in 2025 on mobile and PC, and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, a new racing title scheduled for global release later this year. Additionally, Sonic X Shadow Generations is confirmed as a day-one launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5, 2025.
SEGA’s report makes it clear: Sonic the Hedgehog remains a powerful and profitable cornerstone of the company’s entertainment portfolio, with a multi-pronged strategy that spans games, films, streaming, and merchandise.
