A Minecraft movie just pulled off something massive at the box office—and Sonic the Hedgehog fans are definitely taking notice. In its opening weekend, the Jack Black and Jason Momoa-led film debuted with an incredible $157 million domestically, along with $144 million internationally, for a worldwide total of $301 million. That means it has already outgrossed the entire domestic run of the first Sonic the Hedgehog movie, which wrapped up its time in theaters back in 2020 with $146 million in the U.S. and $302 million globally. And that $1 million lead? It’s expected to vanish once Monday’s numbers roll in, with Minecraft projected to officially surpass Sonic’s global total.
Sonic isn’t the only one getting left in the dust. Minecraft’s massive opening actually beats The Super Mario Bros. Movie’s debut weekend, which previously held the record with $146 million. That makes Minecraft’s domestic opening the biggest of any video game adaptation ever. Whether it can reach the heights of the Mario movie—$1.35 billion worldwide—is still too early to say, but it’s off to a blazing start.
The cast is stacked, too. Jason Momoa and Jack Black headline as Garrett and Steve, respectively. Black, of course, is no stranger to video game movies, having voiced Bowser in last year’s Mario hit. Danielle Brooks joins as Dawn, fresh off her standout role in Peacemaker, and Jennifer Coolidge appears as Vice Principal Marlene. The film is directed by Jared Hess and penned by a group of writers including Chris Bowman, Hubbel Palmer, and Allison Schroeder, among others.
The Minecraft movie is now playing in theaters, and there’s no doubt it’s making a strong case for itself as one of the biggest video game movie launches of all time. While Sonic’s cinematic legacy remains strong—with three successful films and more on the way—there’s a new challenger in town with a pickaxe and a record-breaking weekend to back it up.
