The release of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in theaters has had a profound impact on the resale market for Sonic games, driving prices to unprecedented heights. While movies often boost the value of associated comics and games, Sonic 3 has uniquely influenced older titles connected to Shadow the Hedgehog, a central character in the film.
According to data from Price Charting, games featuring Shadow the Hedgehog have seen the most significant increases. Notably, Sonic Adventure 2, the title that introduced Shadow, has experienced a dramatic price hike. Before the movie’s release, complete Sega Dreamcast copies averaged $140. Now, they sell for an average of $210, with some copies reaching as high as $300.
The GameCube port, Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, has also seen a sharp rise in value. Prior to Sonic 3, it sold for approximately $60. Now, its average price has climbed to $130, with Player’s Choice editions selling for slightly less.
Shadow’s standalone game, Shadow the Hedgehog, has similarly surged across all platforms. The PS2 version now averages $65, the Xbox version $90, and the GameCube edition a remarkable $145—double its previous value.
As with most resale market spikes tied to media releases, these inflated prices are expected to gradually decline as the excitement surrounding Sonic 3 diminishes. For collectors inspired by the movie to begin acquiring older Sonic games, this period might prove to be an expensive starting point.
