SEGA has turned up the heat ahead of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds’ launch with a brand-new commercial that channels the energy of its iconic ’90s marketing campaigns. In a tongue-in-cheek throwback to the days of “Sega does what Nintendon’t,” the ad takes playful aim at Mario Kart World, Nintendo’s latest kart racer, while spotlighting what sets CrossWorlds apart.

The commercial opens by referencing “that kart racing game,” showing a blurred screen resembling Mario Kart World. After briefly acknowledging it as “great,” the tone quickly shifts as high-energy music kicks in and Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds takes the spotlight. The ad highlights defining features such as warp ring stage transitions, full vehicle customization, and cross-platform online play, contrasting them against a struggling RV dragging the pixelated Mario Kart footage.

The comparison is a clear nod to SEGA’s famous drag racer commercials of the Genesis era, which promoted “blast processing” over Nintendo’s slower image. This time, the message comes with a modern twist: “Leave the open road behind and race on our level.”

Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka has previously stated that while he respects Nintendo’s work on Mario Kart World, SEGA’s focus is on delivering a racer that feels unique. The new commercial reflects that vision, leaning into retro bravado while positioning CrossWorlds as a fresh alternative in the crowded kart racing genre.

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds launches worldwide on September 25, 2025 for Nintendo Switch, PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4, with a Nintendo Switch 2 version also confirmed. Fans eager for a dose of ’90s console war spirit mixed with modern Sonic flair will find it alive and well in SEGA’s latest marketing push.

I had a feeling Takashi Iizuka would brutally diss Nintendo just by making this video. And he wasted no time doing so.
