Are we on the brink of seeing a new Sonic fighting game? A recent job listing from Sega has sparked widespread speculation among fans, suggesting that the company might be working on a new 3D battle action game. This discovery, shared by popular streamer GamesCage, has fueled hope that Sega may be preparing to revisit the fighting genre—this time with Sonic at the forefront.

The job listing in question is for a “3D battle action game” and directs applicants to Sega’s 2nd development division, home to Sonic Team, the creators behind most of the Sonic the Hedgehog games. While this division doesn’t exclusively focus on Sonic titles, the timing of this news is intriguing. Just recently, Sega trademarked the name “Sonic Blitz,” a title that seems tailor-made for a high-energy, combat-driven game.

Fans, including GamesCage, are speculating that this could be a spiritual successor to Sonic the Fighters, the 1996 arcade classic that introduced Sonic and his friends to the fighting game arena. However, there’s no official confirmation yet that the job listing or the Sonic Blitz trademark are connected, leaving fans eager for more details.

The idea of a new Sonic fighting game is tantalizing, especially considering how the franchise has grown since Sonic the Fighters debuted nearly 30 years ago. At the time, characters like Shadow, Rouge, and Trip hadn’t even been introduced. A modern fighting game could tap into the franchise’s expanded roster to create a diverse and exciting lineup, blending nostalgic favorites like Knuckles and Tails with newer icons from Sonic‘s ever-expanding universe.

Sega has always been willing to experiment with new genres for the Blue Blur, from racing (Sonic Riders) to pinball (Sonic Spinball). However, fighting games remain a largely untapped opportunity, with Sonic the Fighters, and Sonic Battle being the franchise’s only dedicated entries into the genre. Outside of Sonic‘s appearances in Super Smash Bros., fans haven’t seen the series return to one-on-one combat.

While many fans are crossing their fingers for a console or PC release, there’s also the possibility that Sonic Blitz could be a mobile title. Sega has heavily leaned into mobile gaming in recent years, with releases like Sonic Dream Team (exclusively on Apple Arcade) and the upcoming Sonic Rumble. A mobile fighting game wouldn’t be out of character for Sega but might leave fans of Sonic the Fighters craving something more substantial.

If Sonic Blitz does turn out to be a console release, it would likely represent Sega’s first foray back into the fighting genre in decades. Considering Sega’s steady release schedule for Sonic games—highlighted by this year’s Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, expected to launch this fall—a fighting game could be a bold and refreshing addition to their lineup. However, if Sega sticks to its regular cadence, a new major Sonic title might not arrive until 2026, making the idea of an unexpected fighting game release even more exciting.

Regardless of platform or release date, the potential for a Sonic fighting game has fans buzzing. The franchise’s expanded universe and dynamic characters make it a perfect fit for the genre. With innovative gameplay, Sega could create something that honors the legacy of Sonic the Fighters while introducing a fresh take on combat for modern audiences.

Could Sonic Blitz mark the long-awaited return of Sonic to the fighting game genre, or is Sega planning something entirely different? Either way, fans are eager to see how Sega might innovate with a combat-focused Sonic title.
