Hello Kitty and Sonic the Hedgehog teaming up is nothing new, but their next reported collaboration could be the biggest one yet.

According to reports shared by @Cartoonhistory2 on Twitter, Hello Kitty is expected to return to McDonald’s Happy Meals in 2026, this time alongside Sonic the Hedgehog. If accurate, this would mark the first time the long-running Sanrio and SEGA crossover is adapted specifically for McDonald’s toy lines.

That distinction is important. Past Hello Kitty and Sonic collaborations have mostly lived in the world of retail merchandise, including plush toys, apparel, accessories, and limited-edition collectibles aimed at fans and collectors. A Happy Meal release pushes the pairing into a much more mainstream space, introducing it to a global audience that goes far beyond dedicated Sanrio or Sonic fans.

The contrast between the two characters has always been part of the appeal. Hello Kitty’s gentle, friendly charm sits at the opposite end of the spectrum from Sonic’s speed-driven, action-heavy personality. Previous collaborations leaned into that balance, often dressing Hello Kitty in Sonic-inspired outfits or placing both characters side by side without forcing them into the same role. Translating that dynamic into small, playful Happy Meal toys could be a natural next step rather than a novelty.

Timing also works in both brands’ favor. Hello Kitty continues to enjoy renewed visibility through fashion collaborations, anniversary projects, and lifestyle branding, while Sonic remains firmly in the spotlight thanks to ongoing game releases, major film successes, and frequent crossovers. A McDonald’s promotion brings both characters together at a moment when they are already highly visible to global audiences.

McDonald’s recent approach to Happy Meal toys has also shifted toward more cohesive and collectible sets instead of one-off gimmicks. A Hello Kitty and Sonic lineup has the potential to encourage repeat visits, especially if the toys draw inspiration from earlier Sanrio collaborations while being redesigned for a younger, mass-market audience.

While neither Sanrio, SEGA, nor McDonald’s has officially confirmed the collaboration yet, the idea of Hello Kitty and Sonic sharing Happy Meal boxes feels like a logical evolution of a partnership fans already know well.
