Sonic Team boss Takashi Iizuka has offered an update on the future of the Sonic the Hedgehog series in a new interview with the BBC, explaining that the team’s focus is on developing a brand-new mainline title designed to deliver a “new experience to the players.”
When asked about the possibility of remaking Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2, Iizuka said the team isn’t currently considering remakes, emphasizing that new technology gives them the tools to create deeper and more ambitious worlds.
“Instead of using all that time and energy to remake a game that people have already experienced, we could make a brand new game instead,” Iizuka explained.
“I think the team is really interested in taking that same amount of time and energy and effort to really bring a new experience to the players.”
Iizuka also noted that Sonic Team’s current priorities involve pushing the series forward with “richer, more complex, more interesting worlds,” using modern hardware and design philosophies to deliver something entirely fresh for fans.
The comments come as Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds continues to expand post-launch with new playable characters, crossover events, and seasonal content, representing SEGA’s broader effort to evolve Sonic’s brand across multiple genres and experiences.
While Iizuka didn’t share any concrete details about the next mainline title, his remarks suggest that the team is already planning what comes after Sonic x Shadow Generations and CrossWorlds.
