Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has just broken a major box office record, dethroning Bruce Almighty to become Jim Carrey’s highest-grossing movie of all time and securing its place as the 10th highest-grossing movie of 2024. After 22 years, the 2003 comedy’s long-standing record has finally been surpassed, as Sonic 3 has now grossed $486 million worldwide, narrowly edging out Bruce Almighty’s $484 million total and surpassing 2024’s Chinese comedy-drama YOLO at $479 million.

Directed by Jeff Fowler, the latest Sonic the Hedgehog film continues the franchise’s incredible success, with Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails teaming up to take on Shadow and Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik. The movie’s positive reception and strong global appeal have helped it outpace its predecessors, solidifying Sonic the Hedgehog as a major box office force. With $235.6 million earned domestically and $250.4 million internationally, the film’s success has officially rewritten Carrey’s career records.

Here’s a look at Carrey’s top five highest-grossing films worldwide:

These milestones come as Sonic 3 remains available on VOD and Paramount+, keeping its momentum strong even after its theatrical run. It also cements the Sonic franchise as the most financially successful series of Carrey’s career, surpassing his previous hits in both comedy and holiday blockbusters.

With Sonic the Hedgehog 4 already confirmed for a spring 2027 release, speculation is growing over whether Carrey will reprise his role as Robotnik. While he has been selective about acting projects in recent years, Carrey has expressed appreciation for the Sonic franchise and left the door open for a return, provided director Jeff Fowler presents a compelling enough reason. Given the franchise’s upward trajectory, Sonic 4 could potentially break this new record, making Carrey’s next Sonic appearance an even bigger box office event.
