At The Game Awards 2024, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, SEGA delivered a trio of thrilling announcements that have the gaming community buzzing. The highlights included a brand-new Sonic game and two ambitious projects from Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, showcasing SEGA’s dedication to both innovation and its cherished franchises.
For Sonic fans, the main event was the unveiling of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, a revolutionary racing game starring the iconic Sonic characters. This title promises to redefine the genre with unique mechanics that propel players into a new dimension of high-speed action, setting the stage for an exhilarating experience.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, renowned for the Like a Dragon franchise, introduced two major projects:
- A New Virtua Fighter Project: This entry revitalizes the legendary 3D fighting game series, aligning with the franchise’s 30th anniversary. Fans can expect further details during tonight’s VF Direct presentation at 9 p.m. PT on SEGA’s official YouTube channel. This presentation will also touch on the Legacy Virtua Fighter Project, alongside the mainline reveal.
- Project Century: An entirely fresh IP that expands the studio’s creative boundaries, promising innovation and new adventures.
These announcements follow the studio’s upcoming release, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, launching February 21, 2025.
SEGA Corporation President and COO Shuji Utsumi expressed enthusiasm over the lineup, stating:
SEGA continues to dig into its treasure trove of IP to bring back what our fans have been asking for. This year, we are proud to reveal Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, a completely new project in the Virtua Fighter series, and a brand-new concept from RGG Studio that we’re currently calling Project Century. These join last year’s announcements of Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and more, as we continue to build on our incredible publishing lineup.
Additionally, SEGA celebrated critical success, with Metaphor: ReFantazio receiving multiple awards at The Game Awards, including Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, and Best RPG.
To top off the excitement, SEGA confirmed the release of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Movie Pack for Sonic X Shadow Generations. Available as part of the Digital Deluxe Edition, this DLC lets players take on the role of Shadow in a movie-inspired level, coinciding with the highly anticipated film’s release on December 20, 2024.
With these announcements, SEGA continues to blend nostalgia, innovation, and fan engagement, promising a bright future for its franchises.
