Sonic Mania is nine years old today, and the anniversary celebrations are continuing with another little look back at the game’s development and promotion.
Sonic’s official Korean and Traditional Chinese-language accounts have marked the occasion by turning their attention to Sonic Mania’s pre-release trailers, highlighting just how much personality was packed into the animation surrounding the game before it even launched. Both posts specifically point toward an early sequence showing Sonic cycling through a surprisingly large collection of expressions, describing the trailers as being filled with love for the character.
The translated message reads:
“Sonic Mania celebrates its 9th anniversary today ✏️
Not only the game itself, but even the trailers released before launch were filled with love for Sonic 📽️
Just looking at one scene near the beginning, you can see so many different expressions from Sonic ✨
If you have a favorite scene, be sure to let us know!”
It is a fitting thing to highlight for Sonic Mania, whose promotional animation became almost as memorable as the game itself. The animated opening and trailers leaned heavily into the expressive, energetic look of Sonic’s classic-era artwork, giving the character exaggerated poses and reactions that helped establish Mania’s celebratory tone before players ever got their hands on it.
The posts arrive alongside another particularly interesting anniversary throwback from Christian Whitehead, who revealed a cut animated screen showing the animals originally intended to be inside the Hard-Boiled Heavies and influence their personalities. Between that unused material and SEGA’s own look back at the trailers, the ninth anniversary has unexpectedly turned into a pretty nice little celebration of Sonic Mania’s animation work as well as the game itself.
Sonic Mania originally launched on August 15, 2017, and nine years later there is apparently still plenty hiding in and around it worth revisiting.
