Sonic Adventure may hold a special place in the hearts of longtime fans, but according to Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, a remake or remaster of the Dreamcast classic isn’t on the horizon.

Speaking to Shacknews, Iizuka addressed the frequent calls for a return to the Sonic Adventure series. While he acknowledged the passion fans have for the games, he explained that updating them to meet modern expectations would be just as demanding as creating a brand new title from scratch.

“I do hear that a lot. I really am appreciative for everyone who likes the Sonic Adventure series,” Iizuka said. “But when I think about what it would take to kind of bring that game up to the standards and expectations of what the modern gaming audience would want, I think it would be about as much time and energy as it would to make a new title. Part of me is thinking maybe I should just make a brand new title and that’s why there’s currently no plans.”

This marks a shift from Iizuka’s earlier comments, when he had expressed interest in remaking Sonic Adventure to polish its rougher elements. He’s also voiced a desire to create Sonic Adventure 3, though it’s unclear whether that’s still an active goal.

For now, it looks like Sonic Team’s focus remains on building new experiences rather than remastering the past.
