Sonic the Hedgehog 3 continues its box office dominance, solidifying itself as the highest-grossing film in the franchise while also earning a spot among the top 100 highest-grossing sequels ever at the domestic box office. As of now, the film has grossed $225 million domestically and $220 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $446 million. In the U.S., this puts Sonic 3 ahead of major sequels like The Fate of the Furious, with Rush Hour 2 and Logan next in its sights.
Sonic 3’s Box Office Achievements:
- Biggest Sonic Movie Yet: Sonic 3 has officially outperformed its predecessors in both domestic and international markets.
- Top Video Game Adaptation: The film is currently the second-highest-grossing video game adaptation ever, trailing only The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($1.3 billion).
- Major 2024 Hit: The film ranks among the top 10 domestic releases of 2024 and is in the top 20 highest-grossing international films of the year.
Despite a strong theatrical run, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 was made available for digital rental and purchase on Prime Video and Apple TV+ just over a month after its release. While this move has topped Prime Video’s digital purchase charts, it has also begun to slow box office returns. However, some films—like Wicked—have earned more through digital sales in their first week than they would have in theaters, meaning Paramount’s strategy could still prove beneficial.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is already in development and is slated for release on March 19, 2027. With Sonic 3 still playing in theaters worldwide and its digital release bringing in strong numbers, the Blue Blur shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon.
