Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds may still be a few months away, but fans can get a taste of high-speed hoverboard action early thanks to a new addition to Sonic Racing on Apple Arcade. SEGA HARDlight has announced that Extreme Gear Shadow will officially join the game on July 29, becoming the first character in the title to ride the iconic Extreme Gear.

SEGA HARDlight has released a trailer showcasing gameplay of the new character variant and, as the name implies, it’s Shadow the Hedgehog — only now airborne on a custom Extreme Gear board. Alongside his arrival, a Community Challenge Event called Slipstream Mayhem is set to go live. Players will need to stay in the slipstream to score points, while also dodging Blue Cubes. The update also includes a revamped character screen, making it easier to manage your race team with a fresh new layout — giving players even more reason to rev up their engines and take on new missions.

This update comes at a fitting time. With Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds set to bring back Extreme Gear for the first time in over 15 years in a console racing title, it’s no surprise to see SEGA aligning their mobile and console racing experiences. Whether this is a one-time event or the beginning of a broader crossover push remains to be seen — but fans should keep an eye out as the CrossWorlds launch draws nearer.
