SEGA has launched a new official music playlist project spotlighting the work of its creators.

The first release in the SEGA Creator Playlist series is Tomoya Ohtani – Essential Works, a 100-track collection personally selected by the longtime Sonic the Hedgehog sound director.

The playlist is now available through Spotify and Apple Music:

Tomoya Ohtani – Essential Works brings together music from throughout Ohtani’s career at SEGA, including many of his best-known contributions to the Sonic series.

The collection also reaches beyond Sonic, featuring music from titles such as Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure and Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. Tracks by Serani Poji that feature Ohtani as an arranger are also included.

Across its 100 songs, the playlist covers theme songs, upbeat instrumental pieces, drum and bass, metalcore, and several other genres that have shaped Ohtani’s work.

Ohtani said that he has always determined the musical direction of each project by considering the emotional experience it should create. Rather than prioritizing his own personal style, he approached each game by focusing on its concept and the creative challenge it presented.

However, after placing 100 of his songs together, Ohtani said that despite experimenting with many different genres, they all still feel recognizably like his work.

“I hope people can enjoy it as the journey of a single musician,” Ohtani said.

Ohtani joined SEGA in 1999 and has contributed to numerous console games, including Sonic Adventure 2, Space Channel 5: Part 2, and Rhythm Thief & the Emperor’s Treasure.

He first served as sound director and lead composer for the Sonic series on 2006’s Sonic the Hedgehog. Since then, he has created many of the franchise’s main themes and most recognizable pieces of music.

His work on Sonic Frontiers received an Excellence Award in the music category at the CEDEC Awards 2023. Ohtani was also ranked tenth as an artist in a Japanese government report covering popular Japanese music and artists in the United States during 2023, while “Undefeatable,” featuring Kellin Quinn, placed fifteenth among the listed songs.

Ohtani has also released several DJ projects, including Sonic The Hedgehog DJ Style “PARTY” in 2020 and SEGA 60th Anniversary Official Bootleg DJ Mix in 2021.

Alongside his composition and DJ work, Ohtani performs as a bassist. He has appeared at Sonic Symphony World Tour concerts in London, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Paris, and Boston, while also delivering Sonic-focused DJ performances through the SONIC MUSIC EXPERIENCE events that began in 2025.

SEGA plans to release additional Creator Playlists focused on other members of its creative teams in the future.
