Takashi Iizuka has opened up about one of Sonic the Hedgehog’s most difficult periods, revealing that SEGA once asked him to help rebuild the franchise when its future was uncertain.
Speaking in a new GamesRadar+ interview for Sonic’s 35th anniversary, Iizuka reflected on the long history of the series and noted that Sonic’s journey has not always been a steady climb. While the franchise is now enjoying renewed momentum across games, movies, animation, merchandise, and live events, he said there were points when SEGA internally questioned whether it still needed to continue making Sonic games.
According to Iizuka, one of those turning points came around 10 years ago, when he moved to the United States. At the time, Sonic was at a low point, and he says SEGA told him that if he did not go to America and help build the brand back up, Sonic could come to an end.
Iizuka framed the franchise’s survival and resurgence as something made possible by fan support. He noted that every Sonic title represents a major investment of time, energy, and creative work, and that SEGA needs those releases to succeed in order to keep moving forward with more Sonic projects.
That support, he said, has continued across much more than games. Sonic fans have shown up for movies, animation, and other projects, helping the character remain active through 35 years of changing platforms, styles, and audiences.
The comments offer a rare look at how uncertain Sonic’s future once seemed inside SEGA, especially before the franchise’s recent multimedia comeback. In the years since, Sonic has seen major releases such as Sonic Mania, Sonic Frontiers, Sonic x Shadow Generations, Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, and multiple successful theatrical films, alongside a growing 35th anniversary campaign.
For Iizuka, the message was ultimately one of thanks. Sonic’s history has had its highs and lows, but the continued support from fans has helped keep the Blue Blur running.
