One of Sonic’s most divisive adventures is getting a second chance. Sonic and the Secret Rings, originally released in 2007 for the Nintendo Wii, is being remade by fans for PC — and the project already has a playable demo you can try today.

Titled Project Reignition, this ambitious fan remake aims to modernize Secret Rings while staying true to its original spirit. The developers have overhauled controls, visuals, and gameplay systems to create a smoother, more enjoyable experience for today’s players.

Among the key improvements are:

  • Traditional controller support, removing the Wii version’s motion controls
  • Streamlined gameplay flow, with automatic skill equipment and story mission indicators
  • Performance upgrades ensuring features like Time Break run at a stable framerate
  • Accessibility updates, including multilingual subtitles and voice options

The current demo, released as part of SAGE 2025, features six playable worlds — Sand Oasis, Dinosaur Jungle, Evil Foundry, Levitated Ruin, Pirate Storm, and Skeleton Dome — all beautifully reimagined with updated environments and remixed music.

Additional features include:

  • Full native controller support across Xbox, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Steam Deck
  • Voice dubs in English, Japanese, and Spanish (work in progress)
  • Subtitles in ten languages including English, French, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese
  • Adjustable aspect ratios from 4:3 to 21:9
  • Over 15 new remixes and original tracks, plus 50+ skills and augments to customize gameplay

While Sonic and the Secret Rings wasn’t the most celebrated entry in the franchise, Project Reignition gives it the polish and refinement many fans felt it deserved. The remake reimagines the game’s mechanics while preserving its distinctive Arabian Nights atmosphere and story.

You can download the demo now and experience it for yourself through the project’s official pages.
