Shrek Joins Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Thanks to New Fan Mod

Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds has already shown it is more than just a Sonic the Hedgehog game. With crossover racers like SpongeBob SquarePants, Hatsune Miku, Joker from Persona 5, and Ichiban from Yakuza, the game feels closer to a Sonic-flavored Fortnite than a traditional kart racer.

But apparently, that still wasn’t enough. Over on Nexus Mods, creator Hallow has taken things to another level by adding none other than Shrek to the game. The mod places the green ogre over Dr. Eggman’s model, complete with the cheeky tagline: “Shrek races to save his family from bankruptcy.”

As ridiculous as it sounds, Shrek somehow doesn’t feel completely out of place. It is almost too easy to imagine him scolding Shadow for being dramatic, or joining Big the Cat for a relaxed fishing trip.

Given the current roster, it actually doesn’t seem far-fetched. Beyond the Sonic cast, players already have Hatsune Miku, Ichiban, Joker, Steve, Alex, and Creeper from Minecraft, plus SpongeBob and Patrick. And that’s only the launch lineup.

Future DLC is set to add Mega Man, Pac-Man, characters from Avatar: The Last Airbender, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and NiGHTS. With SEGA leaning so heavily into collaborations, the door feels wide open for even stranger additions.

While it might be bittersweet to some seeing the Blue Bomber continue to cameo everywhere except in his own new game, at the same time, it highlights just how much CrossWorlds has embraced its crossover identity. If SEGA keeps expanding the roster, who’s to say Shrek could not one day show up for real?

One thing is certain: we are living in the wildest and most unexpected Sonic timeline yet.
