Another twist in the tale of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds‘ physical release has surfaced. Just days after reports suggested the game would launch as a full cartridge on Nintendo’s Switch 2, new developments point to the opposite — it might actually be a Game Key Card after all.

The confusion reignited after Wario64 shared a customer service response from SEGA, in which an agent confirmed that the Switch 2 version of Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds would be distributed as a Game Key Card. This contradicts earlier rumors fueled by mock-up box art that implied a traditional cartridge release.

Gematsu further cast doubt on the cartridge claim by pointing out key differences in the packaging. Notably, the mocked-up box art for CrossWorlds lacked the “Switch 2 Edition” branding seen on other official titles, suggesting it may not be final. The outlet also noted that SEGA’s other Switch 2 games so far have been distributed as Game Key Cards, reinforcing the likelihood that CrossWorlds will follow the same pattern.

As it stands, there are two competing possibilities:

  • Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds will be a Game Key Card, and the customer service response was accurate
  • It will be a full cartridge release, and the current mock-ups are just placeholders

Either way, the situation remains murky for fans hoping to avoid yet another key card title on Nintendo’s latest hardware. With no official Switch 2-specific release date announced yet, the uncertainty continues to build for what is already shaping up to be one of Sonic’s most ambitious racing titles.
