Additionally, Flynn revealed snippets of the storyline for the initial issues, which would pick up after the events of Sonic Forces and explore the aftermath of the War to Take Back the Planet. Regarding the Sega relationship, it was disclosed that Sega was more directly involved in the story development, offering suggestions for tweaks. Setting

The comic is situated within the Sonic the Hedgehog video game continuity, drawing heavy inspiration from recent games. Sonic the Hedgehog and his companions reside on a planet called Earth, populated by anthropomorphic animals like themselves and humans. This world is under constant threat from the nefarious human scientist, Dr. Eggman, who seeks to dominate it with his army of Badniks and establish his Eggman Empire.

Before the comic’s narrative unfolds, Sonic and his allies have been engaged in a prolonged struggle against the Eggman Empire, clashing with Eggman on numerous occasions. Flashbacks to events from previous Sonic games are integrated into the comic series. At the outset of the storyline, Sonic and his friends are grappling with the aftermath of Eggman’s recent conquest of the planet, as depicted in Sonic Forces, the most recent Sonic game at the time.

Canonicity

On November 18, 2022, Ian Flynn affirmed on his BumbleKast podcast that the IDW Sonic comic series is indeed canon. Additionally, in the seventh episode of the seventh season of Sonic Official, Chris Hernandez, a Lore Manager, reiterated that the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comics are considered 100% canon and occur after the events depicted in Sonic Forces.[27]Sonic Official – Season 7 Episode 7 (timestamp 15:57)

Further reinforcing its canon status, Sonic mentions Tangle while Eggman references the Eggnet in Sonic Frontiers. Moreover, in the debut episode of “TailsTube,” Sonic receives questions from Tangle and the Spiral Hill Fan Club. In another episode titled “Surprise Gift Exchange Bonanza,” Tails mentions Jewel when responding to Eggman’s inquiry about holiday plans.

Storyline

After Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies triumphed over Dr. Eggman, ending his oppressive rule during the Eggman War, the nefarious doctor disappeared, leaving his Badniks behind. These robotic remnants, initially without direction, soon began launching coordinated attacks on villages, suggesting a new puppet master was at work. Sonic embarks on a journey from town to town to thwart these Badnik assaults, aided by both familiar faces and newfound allies like Tangle the Lemur.

With the assistance of the Chaotix Detective Agency, Sonic locates the missing Dr. Eggman, only to find him suffering from amnesia and living as a reformed citizen. Just as Sonic and the Chaotix consider leaving Eggman to his new life, Shadow arrives with Rouge intent on eliminating the Doctor upon hearing him mention Eggman Land. Sonic persuades Shadow to give the amnesiac Eggman a chance to prove his newfound goodwill. Eggman subsequently reveals that the Eggman Land he spoke of was merely an innocent amusement park for children, dispelling any doubts about his amnesia. Meanwhile, the mastermind behind the Badnik attacks makes his next move.

Sonic and Tails, seeking information, infiltrate the Egg Fleet aboard the Tornado, only for Sonic to discover the true orchestrator: Neo Metal Sonic. Assuming Eggman’s appearance, Neo Metal Sonic has taken command of the Eggman Empire to fulfill its incomplete plans. Amy and Knuckles are notified, and they decide to rally the Resistance once more to thwart Neo’s scheme. Sonic, with the help of Silver and newcomer Whisper, infiltrates one of Eggman’s bases, discovering Neo Metal Sonic’s plan to conquer Angel Island and seize the Master Emerald.

Gathering their allies, Sonic and the Resistance mount an assault on Angel Island to liberate it and halt Neo Metal Sonic’s plans. Sonic and Knuckles confront Neo, who taps into the power of the Master Emerald, transforming into Super Neo Metal Sonic. Meanwhile, the Resistance succeeds in freeing Angel Island. However, Shadow’s intervention during Sonic and Knuckles’ battle enables Neo to evolve further into the formidable Master Overlord. Despite the heightened challenge, the combined efforts of the heroes lead to Master Overlord’s defeat and the restoration of Angel Island. With their mission accomplished, Knuckles disbands the Resistance, opting to stay on Angel Island as its guardian.

Unknown to Sonic and his allies, Eggman falls into the clutches of Rough and Tumble, who deliver him to Dr. Starline, an Eggman devotee seeking to restore Eggman’s former glory. Starline provides Eggman with the Chaos Emeralds, earning himself a position as Eggman’s newest lackey. Eggman resumes his nefarious activities, concocting the Metal Virus capable of transforming organics into robotic slaves. To distract Sonic, Eggman and Starline set a trap, leading Sonic and Tails into a confrontation with Rough and Tumble. Although Sonic defeats the skunk brothers, they vanish before the heroes can glean any information.

With suspicions of Eggman’s return to villainy, Sonic seeks answers and clashes with Dr. Starline, narrowly escaping death. As Sonic resumes his search for Eggman, he and Amy stumble upon Eggman’s plans for a Faceship while infiltrating an abandoned Eggman base. Their discovery triggers an attack by Rough and Tumble, who inadvertently become infected with the Metal Virus due to Eggman’s machinations. Sonic manages to contain Rough and Tumble but is infected with the Metal Virus himself in the process.

Returning to Tails for assistance, Sonic and his companions learn that Sonic’s speed can temporarily suppress and control his infection from the Metal Virus. Concerned for his friends’ safety and determined to prevent further infections, Sonic sets off to locate Eggman’s Faceship, which is suspected to be distributing the Metal Virus. However, Sonic arrives too late; Eggman has already launched the Chaos Emerald-powered Faceship and initiated the spread of the Metal Virus in strategic locations. As the virus spreads, the Chaotix’s city falls victim to an outbreak, resulting in Charmy becoming a Zombot.

Eggman orchestrates another outbreak in Cream’s village to draw Sonic into a trap, but the Zombots’ behavior begins to deviate from Eggman’s control, raising doubts in Starline’s mind about Eggman’s genius. Meanwhile, Sonic aids Cream and Vanilla in evacuating their village while Gemerl protects them. However, Cheese and Chocola are infected during the chaos. Sonic then rushes to Sunset City to assist Team Dark against the Faceship, only to find the city overrun by Zombots upon his arrival. Sonic and Team Dark work to save civilians, but Sonic’s constant exertion begins to wear him down.

Amidst the chaos, Shadow falls victim to the Metal Virus and transforms into a Zombot. Sonic confronts the Zombot Shadow, managing to hold him off while Rouge evacuates the uninfected civilians. Omega stays behind to fend off the Zombots but is overwhelmed. Silver and Tails arrive to aid Sonic and Omega, leaving Shadow behind. Tails provides Sonic with a sensor to better understand how his speed affects the Metal Virus.

Meanwhile, Starline hatches a plan to control the Zombots with the Deadly Six, signaling further trouble on the horizon.

Tails travels to Central City with Tangle and Whisper to research a cure for the Metal Virus. When another Zombot outbreak occurs, Tangle and Whisper lead evacuation efforts while Tails works on his research. Unfortunately, their mission is disrupted by Cheese, Chocola, and other Zombots, causing Tails’ work to be ruined. Despite this setback, Tails joins Tangle and Whisper in evacuating the remaining uninfected citizens.

Meanwhile, Dr. Starline visits the Lost Hex and enlists the help of Zavok, although Zavok harbors ulterior motives unknown to Starline. Back at Restoration HQ, Vector and Espio return with refugees, including Zombot Charmy, intending to keep him there until Tails finds a cure. However, Gemerl objects, seeking to protect Cream. Chaos ensues when a refugee reveals infection, causing Charmy to break free and infect others. With emergency evacuation underway, only one Rescue Shuttle remains available. Vanilla stays behind to ensure Cream’s safety, making Amy promise to protect her daughter. In a selfless act, Vector seals himself and the Zombots inside the HQ so the others can escape.

The Rescue Shuttle heads to Central City to assist Tails, Tangle, Whisper, and the survivors. Sonic aids by providing data to Tails’ bio-scanner while running. He encounters Eggman and Starline in Barricade Town, where they attempt to control the Zombots. Sonic thwarts their plan, forcing them to retreat to the Faceship. Recognizing Eggman’s self-destructive nature, Starline seeks aid from the Deadly Six, anticipating their betrayal and retrieving the Cacophonic Conch.

Following a Zombot outbreak in Spiral Hill Village, the Restoration rushes to aid in evacuation, and Sonic is called in to assist. Sonic learns that Tangle has been infected by Jewel but chooses to stay behind to hold back the Zombots, allowing the Restoration to retreat. Meanwhile, aboard the Faceship, Starline swiftly brings the Deadly Six on board, intending to control them with the Cacophonic Conch. However, he loses control, and the Deadly Six take the conch. Starline escapes with Eggman and Metal Sonic using his Warp Topaz.

Zavok shifts focus, equipping each of the Deadly Six with a Chaos Emerald to control the Zombots worldwide, aiming to infect and destroy everything Sonic and Eggman hold dear. Sonic and his allies seek refuge on Angel Island, where they are unexpectedly joined by Eggman, Starline, and Metal Sonic. Rouge informs them of the Deadly Six’s plan, revealing her collaboration with Orbot to spy on them. The heroes and villains unite to combat the Metal Virus.

Eggman proposes using the Warp Topaz charged by Super Sonic’s power, but Starline refuses. With Metal Sonic’s assistance, Eggman seizes the Warp Topaz from Starline and banishes him from the island. To bolster their forces against the Deadly Six, the heroes enlist the Babylon Rogues.

Eggman and Tails successfully construct a Multi-Portal Generator to reach each of the Deadly Six. After forming teams, the heroes confront the Zeti. They manage to retrieve five Chaos Emeralds from Zazz, Zomom, Zeena, and Master Zik, but Cream is infected, and the Babylon Rogues are left to fend off Zombots alone. As survivors regroup on the island, Zavok approaches in the Faceship, leading a horde of Zombots. Rouge crashes the Faceship, but Zavok grows and launches Zombots onto the island.

While survivors hold off the Zombots, Sonic, Metal Sonic, and Silver pursue Zavok’s Chaos Emerald. Sonic nearly succumbs to infection but is saved by Metal Sonic. With the last Chaos Emerald, Sonic and Silver transform into Super Sonic and Super Silver, curing Sonic and ridding the world of the Metal Virus. Super Sonic opens a Super Warp Portal to the sun, and Super Silver uses his psychokinesis to cleanse the world. The Metal Virus is destroyed in the sun, but the Warp Topaz explodes when Super Sonic tries to dispose of it.

Silver informs the others that Sonic disappeared in the explosion. Zavok is captured, but Eggman escapes with Omega’s head. Blaze finds Sonic, who has amnesia, in her world. Meanwhile, Sonic’s world recovers from the Zombot apocalypse, and the heroes celebrate in Tangle’s hometown. Eggman attacks with a mech incorporating a repaired Omega. Sonic regains his memory with Blaze’s help and returns to defeat Eggman and free Omega. With Eggman plotting anew, Sonic sets off once more.

Rouge and Amy turn to Tails to repair Omega, requiring his blueprints’ ciphers and rare E-100 Series parts. While Sonic and Tails retrieve the ciphers, Rouge’s group competes in the White Park Chao Racing Circuit for parts from Clutch the Opossum. They encounter Shadow and a mysterious figure, and Cheese wins the races, leading to a confrontation with Clutch. Sonic and Tails encounter Belle in an abandoned Eggman base but are ambushed by Badniks.

They escape and head to White Park after Rouge sends a distress call. Tails is knocked out by Rouge, and Sonic searches for them. Clutch attacks with Badniks, and Tails and Rouge are tied up by Starline. Sonic and Shadow confront Starline, who triggers an avalanche. Sonic and Shadow try to stop it, while Tails and Rouge warn others at the chateau. Starline attempts to kidnap Tails but is defeated and buried by the avalanche. Tails repairs Omega with Belle’s help, raising suspicions about her creator. Starline survives and plots with Tails’ fur sample.

After Belle joins the Restoration and befriends Tangle, Sonic, Tails, and Amy investigate a tower suspected to be linked to Eggman’s activities. Inside, they encounter spatial distortions and Quasi-Badniks. Meanwhile, Tangle and Belle infiltrate the tower and learn about Eggman’s plans. Belle, who discovers she was created by Eggman, grapples with despair over her origins. As Sonic’s group battles Egg Vipers, Tangle rescues Orbot and Cubot, and the tower begins to collapse. Sonic saves everyone before the tower’s destruction. Belle reveals her past and futile attempts to redeem Eggman, accepting the impossibility of changing him.

After Sonic intercepts Eggman’s hunt for the Deadly Six, Master Zik decides to reunite the group to attack Restoration HQ, led by Zavok seeking revenge. The Chaotix, hired by Jewel, track the Deadly Six, but the heroes realize they’ve been misled when the Deadly Six attack the HQ. Sonic and Tails defeat them with the Zeti Zappers, but Belle is kidnapped by Starline. Sonic rescues Belle but Starline escapes. Meanwhile, the Chaotix track Rough and Tumble aiding Clutch in rebuilding his criminal empire. Later, Amy’s camping trip turns chaotic with forest fires and secrets revealed. Tangle quits the Restoration, Belle’s past is explored, and the Chaotix uncover a new criminal plot in Central City involving Rough, Tumble, and Clutch.

Sonic, Tails, and Belle manage to transfer Motobud’s programming to other Badniks, but they discover a global control signal compelling all Badniks to gather in Eggperial City. They trace the signal to Eggperial City, where Dr. Starline has invaded and intends to control Eggman’s Badniks. Sonic, Tails, and Belle confront Starline and face his creations, Surge and Kitsunami. Surge seeks vengeance against Starline and attacks Sonic, while Kitsunami battles Tails. Eggman arrives and defeats Starline, rescuing Belle. Sonic’s team defeats Surge and Kitsunami, but they escape with a plan to absorb all the city’s energy. Sonic, Tails, and their allies track them to Egg Base Sigma, where a final showdown ensues. They manage to defeat Surge and Kitsunami, but Sonic must stop Eggman’s collapsing city, aided by Shadow’s Chaos Control. The heroes escape as the city is destroyed, but Surge and Kitsunami survive. Sonic joins the Restoration’s mission to infiltrate Eggperial City, facing new challenges and dangers. Meanwhile, Amy, Knuckles, and others deal with various challenges, including a partnership offer from Clutch and the return of the Babylon Rogues. Surge and Kitsunami, seeking redemption, join the Restoration, sparking mixed reactions among Sonic’s friends. As they embark on a new adventure, Sonic and his allies face personal and external challenges, striving to protect their world and make it a better place.

Meanwhile, Sonic utilizes Tails’ bio-scanner to investigate how his speed counters the Metal Virus. He confronts Dr. Eggman and Dr. Starline in Barricade Town, where they are attempting to regain control over the Zombots. Although Sonic disrupts their plans, the bio-scanner is destroyed in the process. Sonic then assists the Restoration in evacuating Spiral Hill Village after it suffers a Zombot outbreak, but tragically loses Tangle to the virus in the process.

Meanwhile, Dr. Starline forms an alliance with the Deadly Six, each party harboring their own nefarious intentions.

All or Nothing

After Dr. Starline’s failed attempt to control the Deadly Six with the Cacophonic Conch onboard the Faceship, he, Dr. Eggman, and Metal Sonic escape. The Zeti, realizing they can use the Chaos Emeralds to empower themselves and control the Zombots, decide to take action. Rouge, who had previously infiltrated the ship, relays this information to Sonic and the others, who have sought refuge on Angel Island. Surprisingly, Eggman and Metal Sonic join forces with them, leading to Eggman later dismissing Starline. Together, they devise a plan to confront the Deadly Six using the Warp Topaz.

A Multi-Portal Generator is constructed, enabling the survivors, including the Babylon Rogues, to engage in battle and retrieve the Chaos Emeralds from the Zeti. With all but Zavok’s Chaos Emerald in their possession, Sonic, Silver, and Metal Sonic team up to obtain it, triggering their transformation into Super Sonic and Super Silver. Utilizing their newfound powers, they defeat Zavok and eradicate the Metal Virus, curing all infected individuals.

However, when Super Sonic attempts to dispose of the Warp Topaz, he mysteriously disappears.

Out of the Blue

With the Metal Virus eradicated, the Deadly Six opt to keep a low profile, while Zavok finds himself imprisoned. Sonic’s sudden disappearance causes a stir among his friends, allowing Dr. Eggman to escape with his allies and Omega. In the ensuing days, several events unfold: Amy entrusts control of the Restoration to Jewel; Tails and Tangle free Rough and Tumble from Echo Mine; Silver returns to a restored future; Vanilla, Cream, Cheese, Chocola, and Gemerl assist the Chaotix in missing persons cases; Shadow ponders Sonic’s previous warning.

Subsequently, Eggman interrupts Tangle’s party at Spiral Hill Village with a weaponized Omega. Meanwhile, Sonic reappears on Blaze’s world with amnesia. With her help, he recovers his memories and returns home to aid his friends in thwarting Eggman once again.

Chao Races and Badnik Bases

After the Zombot crisis, Omega sustains damage, prompting Sonic, Tails, and Amy to seek help. They turn to the White Park Chao Racing Circuit, where Cream, Cheese, Amy, and Rouge aim to negotiate with the renowned Chao racer, Clutch, for necessary parts. Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails encounter Belle while investigating an abandoned Eggman base. Belle later assists Cream, Amy, and Gemerl when they discover that Clutch has imprisoned Chao for his races. At White Park, Shadow encounters a hooded figure revealed to be Dr. Starline, who kidnaps Rouge and Tails and triggers an avalanche as a distraction. Although Omega startles Starline, Belle intervenes to prevent further harm, while Sonic and Shadow attempt to halt the avalanche. Despite their efforts, everyone escapes the chateau unharmed. Omega is subsequently repaired.

Test Run!

Belle is welcomed into the Restoration, finding camaraderie with Tangle. As a mysterious tower causing anomalous storms emerges, Sonic, Tails, and Amy embark on an investigation, only to become ensnared in robot testing chambers controlled by Dr. Eggman, where spatial laws are manipulated. Upon discovering the intrusion, Eggman seizes the opportunity to pit his robots against the heroes. Meanwhile, despite Jewel’s prohibition, Tangle, accompanied by Belle, follows the group to the tower. There, it’s revealed that Belle is a Badnik created by Eggman during his time as the amnesiac Mr. Tinker. With Tangle’s help, Sonic and his allies escape the chambers, fleeing the tower before it collapses due to a feedback loop, along with their adversaries.

Master Zik overhears that Zavok is on the loose and decides to aid his former pupil. Meanwhile, Zavok, fueled by anger, seeks to regather the Deadly Six. After finding Zazz and Zomom, the trio reunites with Master Zik, Zeena, and Zor. Together, the reassembled Deadly Six plan to launch an assault on Restoration HQ. In response, Jewel enlists the Chaotix Detective Agency, while Sonic also joins the effort. Despite the heroes’ preparations, the Deadly Six infiltrate Restoration HQ and cause chaos, while Dr. Starline seizes the opportunity to abduct Belle. Sonic swiftly intervenes to confront the Deadly Six, with assistance from Tails and his Zeti Zappers. Following the battle, Sonic and Tails transport the Deadly Six back to the Lost Hex, while the Chaotix rescue Belle. However, Starline manages to extract the data he needs from Belle before fleeing, advancing his own sinister agenda.

Trial by Fire

After a series of recent events, Amy, Jewel, Tangle, and Belle decide to take a camping trip to unwind and find peace. However, tensions arise among the group. Suddenly, a forest fire breaks out around their campsite. Belle becomes trapped in the flames but receives unexpected assistance from Motobud. Meanwhile, Amy and Jewel organize efforts to manage the situation, while Tangle searches for a missing child named Ashe and his companion, Red Hot. Eventually, Tangle reunites with Belle and, with the help of Motobud, locates Ashe and Red Hot. They discover that anonymous individuals are responsible for the fire. Together, they return to the campground and assist Jewel in her efforts to extinguish the fire. Afterward, Tails repairs Belle’s damaged hand, and Tangle decides to leave the Restoration with Jewel’s support to search for Whisper.

In another development, the Chaotix investigate a power surge and encounter Clutch, Rough, and Tumble. Despite Clutch’s intentions to revive his arms dealership empire, the Chaotix engage in a confrontation, leading to Vector destroying Clutch’s entire collection of Badniks. However, the trio manages to escape. Following a successful experiment to neutralize hostile Badniks, Sonic, Tails, and Belle discover that the world’s Badniks are being drawn to Eggperial City. This prompts them to investigate the situation further.

Battle for the Empire

In Eggperial City, Sonic and Tails confront Surge the Tenrec and Kitsunami the Fennec, creations of Dr. Starline who harbor hatred towards him and aim to bring destruction to the world. Despite attempting to reason with them, the heroes are unable to sway their adversaries, but they succeed in defeating them. Meanwhile, Dr. Eggman thwarts Starline’s attempt to seize control of his empire and abandons him to his fate. At the same time, Belle, having repaired Metal Sonic, informs Eggman that she is bidding him farewell for good. In retaliation, Eggman sends his Badniks after Sonic, Tails, and Belle. The trio faces an ambush by a horde of Badniks, prompting them to seek refuge in a shuttle. However, their escape is thwarted when Metal Sonic attacks and destroys the shuttle.

Overpowered

After the shuttle crash, Sonic, Tails, and Belle awaken to find Sonic with an injured leg. Metal Sonic prepares for another attack while Kit regains consciousness, and Surge survives her fall from Issue 50. The group evades Metal Sonic, using a water container to temporarily suspend him. Sonic recaps recent events to Kit, who then uses his abilities to refill his pack and defeat Metal Sonic. The trio escapes the city, while Surge finds the Dynamo Cage and also flees.

In Central City, Surge tests her new powers, encountering Whisper. A fight ensues, with Surge using the Dynamo Cage to absorb all the Wisps. Just as she is about to kill Whisper, she hallucinates Starline again. Jewel informs Sonic and Tails about the situation, and they rush to investigate while Belle consoles Kit over losing Surge. Sonic and Tails arrive in Central City, where Tails drops Sonic onto a car to confront Surge. A battle begins between Sonic and Surge, while Tails comforts Whisper over the loss of her Wisps. Tails then joins the fight, carrying Sonic, but Surge gains the upper hand with a Spin Attack.

Despite his injured leg, Sonic uses Whisper’s Laser Wisp to gain an advantage, but Surge defends with the Cube Wisp and absorbs the Laser Wisp. Tails devises a plan, and Sonic leads Surge into a trap, knocking her out. Kit discovers Surge is alive and escapes with her. Sonic, Tails, Eggman, and Metal Sonic track Surge to Egg Base Sigma.

A confrontation ensues at Egg Base Sigma, with Sonic fighting Metal Sonic and Eggman getting ambushed by Surge. Surge absorbs all the energy in the base, but Sonic, Tails, Eggman, and Metal Sonic find Surge and Kit, leading to another fight. Sonic and Metal Sonic battle Surge, while Tails fights Kit. Surge complains about the unfair fight, knocks out Metal Sonic, and breaks the water containers to use her electric powers against Sonic. Eggman saves Sonic from Surge’s attack.

Tails and Kit conclude their fight, and Surge, using all the Wisps, tries to defeat Sonic. Sonic tells Surge that while she can take freedom, she can’t keep it. Surge attempts to kill Sonic with her electric powers, but the Dynamo Cage backfires, knocking her out. Kit tries to kill everyone but fails, leading to both groups going their separate ways.

Urban Warfare

Sonic arrives at Restoration HQ and meets with Jewel, Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin, who are forming a team to infiltrate Eggperial City. Sonic eagerly joins them, and they head to the city. Upon scouting the area, they find an underground section. A trap activates, separating Sonic from the trio. Sonic battles several Badniks and finds a place to hide, calling Jewel for backup. Silver and Blaze arrive, using their powers to help fight off more Badniks.

Meanwhile, Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin make their way to the main tower. As they engage more Badniks, Tails uses his Miles Electric to devise a plan. A big explosion occurs, drawing Sonic and Tails to investigate, where they encounter Team Dark. Silver, Blaze, and Amy arrive at the scene, while Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin discover Shadow Androids.

Eggman unleashes the Shadow Androids on the group. Sonic calls for a retreat, and Silver uses his psychokinesis to create a ramp, launching them onto a building. Tails identifies that huge crystals are generating Chaos Energy, which Shadow uses to defeat more Shadow Androids. Giant Fake Chaos Emeralds emerge from the ground, prompting Sonic and the others to seek higher ground. Shadow and Omega are left behind as Lanolin, Tangle, and Whisper escape a trap due to a power outage. Eggman captures Whisper and Lanolin in a hexagonal trap, and Tangle barely escapes by falling out of the tower.

Tangle, now on the ground, is pursued by Metal Sonic. She finds the courage to search for her friends, despite Metal Sonic using her as a tracker. She warns everyone about the hexagonal traps, and Sonic confronts Metal Sonic while the others dodge the traps. Amy suspends Metal Sonic by breaking the floor. The group splits up: Rouge, Blaze, and Silver go to find Shadow and Omega, while Sonic, Tails, Amy, and Tangle head to the central tower.

At the central tower, they are confronted by Metal Sonic. Tangle blinds Metal Sonic, allowing Tails and Amy to carry Sonic and Tangle to the tower. Blaze, Silver, and Rouge find Shadow and Omega, engaging Shadow Androids. Silver frees Shadow while Blaze and Rouge fight the androids. The other group reaches the central tower, where Amy shoves Eggman, and Tails disables the safeguards. Eggman knocks out Amy, and Metal Sonic traps Sonic in a hexagonal trap. Whisper and Lanolin appear, helping Sonic fight Metal Sonic. The team defeats Metal Sonic with Sonic and Omega’s combined efforts.

They land on the emeralds that Shadow is controlling. Sonic gets a boost from Tails, Amy, and Tangle, destroying Eggman’s city. As the emeralds are about to explode, Shadow uses Chaos Control to teleport them into space. After everyone leaves the city, Rouge gives Amy a relic to return to Knuckles.

Misadventures

Amy uses her Pink Cabriolet from Team Sonic Racing to travel to Angel Island and return the relic Rouge stole from Knuckles. Upon arrival, the ground collapses, causing Amy to fall into Hydrocity, where Knuckles catches her. Meanwhile, Clutch meets with Mimic, proposing a partnership with his company, Clean Sweep Inc., and tasks Mimic with infiltrating the Restoration. Amy returns the relic to Knuckles, who declines her offer of assistance in protecting the island.

Back at the Restoration HQ, Tangle, Whisper, and Lanolin reflect on the events at Eggperial City when they meet Duo, a cat who wishes to join the Diamond Cutters. After an interview, Tangle offers Duo a place to stay. Unknown to them, Duo is actually Mimic, who informs Clutch of his successful infiltration. The Diamond Cutters, including Silver who joins them, train together. During training, Duo’s actions raise suspicions, but Whisper and Silver’s attempts to expose him fail, leading to a misunderstanding and Silver’s temporary exclusion from the team.

Sonic takes Blaze sightseeing around Spagonia, and they later find Silver sulking in his garden. Blaze suggests they visit Soleanna to lift Silver’s spirits. Meanwhile, the Babylon Rogues ambush Knuckles on Angel Island, stealing relics that the Chaotix Detective Agency is later hired to retrieve. The Chaotix successfully recover the relics from the Rogues, but dinner plans are disrupted by Rough and Tumble. The group decides on takeout instead. Clutch’s true intention is revealed: he hired the Babylon Rogues to distract the Chaotix while he negotiated a partnership with Jewel for Clean Sweep Inc.

At Restoration HQ, Sonic is surprised to see Surge and Kit with Amy. They claim to seek a fresh start, prompting a flashback showing their encounter with Clutch and their agreement to help him. Sonic and Amy give them a tour of the HQ, meeting Silver and Blaze along the way. Despite initial tensions, Surge and Kit seem to fit in. Duo (Mimic) facilitates their integration, revealing his true identity and intentions to Surge and Kit.

Sonic and Tails test a new Extreme Gear design in search of a Chaos Emerald. They locate the Emerald but are caught in an earthquake. After navigating through a cave and encountering a protective Salamander, Sonic offers the Chaos Emerald in exchange for safe passage. The Salamander shows them the exit, and Sonic covers it to prevent further disturbances. Sonic and Tails leave with the Chaos Emerald, heading off into the sunset.

Reception

Bleeding Cool gave the first issue of the IDW Sonic the Hedgehog series a score of 6.5/10. They praised the art and creativity of the story but criticized Sonic’s characterization, describing him as “an insufferable character” who is “smug, annoying, and radical in that 1990s sense” .[28]Sonic the Hedgehog #1 Review: Creative Action Scenes Make Up for an Annoying Lead. Bleeding Cool (5 April 2018). Retrieved on 16 July 2018.

Trivia

An unused image by Tyson Hesse was used for the cover of a PREVIEWSworld catalogue, which showcases upcoming comics for comic shops. The IDW Sonic the Hedgehog comic launched in what would have been the 25th anniversary year of its predecessor, the Archie Comics series.

On October 9, 2017, Ian Flynn stated on BumbleKing that there could be a chance to conclude the Pre-Super Genesis Wave continuity from the Archie comics in the IDW comics, as IDW often completes older runs of fan-favorite franchise comics.[30]Lost Hedgehog Tales “Update”. BumbleKing (9 October 2017). The comic’s logo is the same as the official video game franchise, while the promo art from the New York Comic-Con resembles the latest Archie Comics logo.

SEGA requested a distinct division between “Classic Sonic” and “Modern Sonic,” meaning characters like Ray, Mighty, and Team Hooligan would not appear in the comics.[31]Flynn, Ian . Sonic the Hedgehog FAQ. BumbleKing. On August 26, 2018, Flynn stated at SAGE 2018 that the “Modern Sonic” universe was neither set on Earth nor Mobius. Instead, Sonic and friends lived on one world, and humans on another, aligning with the game’s canon at the time.[32]Schneckloth, Ryan . SAGE 2018: Interview with Ian Flynn Summary. TSSZ News.
