Sonic the Hedgehog (Archie)

For the version of this character before the Super Genesis Wave, see Sonic the Hedgehog (Pre-Super Genesis Wave).

Sonic the Hedgehog is the titular main protagonist of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by Archie Comics. He is a mobian hedgehog endowed with the power of super speed and the ability to control the Chaos Emeralds. Renowned as the hero of his world, Sonic has been the primary opposition to the villainous reign of Dr. Eggman and the Eggman Empire for years. He is the strongest and primary agent of the Freedom Fighters, a generation of heroes whom he inspired with his unyielding heroism and who continue to draw strength from him.

Sonic’s speed is his ultimate weapon, which he uses to help those in need and thwart his enemies’ plans. Although sometimes overconfident and inclined to handle challenges on his own, Sonic understands the importance of having friends to back him up when needed. He is also willing to risk his life for his loved ones.

Appearance

Sonic in his younger years, from Sonic the Hedgehog #288.
Sonic’s latest appearance, from Sonic the Hedgehog #252.

Sonic is a slim, mobian hedgehog with blue fur covering most of his body and peach skin on his arms, muzzle, inside his ears, and front torso. He has small, triangular ears on top of his head, six long quills on the back of his head, two spines protruding from his back behind his shoulders, and a short, pointy tail.

For attire, Sonic wears lightweight, hyper-friction-resistant red sneakers with white cuffs around the ankles, gray soles, and white straps across the top, held down by a gold buckle on each foot. He also wears a pair of white gloves with sock-like cuffs on his hands.

In his younger years, Sonic was shorter and stubbier, with a round head, an equally round torso, and black eyes (although this trait has been portrayed inconsistently). Over time, he has grown taller and thinner, and now has green eyes.

Personality

Always prepared to put his life on the line to protect others, whether they are friends or civilians, Sonic is a carefree spirit and a fearless daredevil with a heart of gold. He typically maintains an easygoing, cool, and fun-loving demeanor. Kind-hearted and never passing up an opportunity to help someone in need, Sonic embodies the spirit of a true hero.

Having saved the world numerous times, Sonic has developed an inflated ego, thinking highly of himself and viewing heroics as a workout or a chance to have fun. This makes him sassy, quick-witted, cocky, and occasionally overconfident.[1]Sonic the Hedgehog #265, “Control Part Two: Unleashed!”[2]Sonic the Hedgehog #264, “Control Part One: Breaking Point” Despite this, he holds a firm conviction of justice and a desire to stop evildoers like Dr. Eggman. While Sonic generally assumes he can handle situations alone, he also knows his friends will back him up in troubled times, as shown during his adventure on the Eastwatch Islands.[3]Sonic: Mega Drive – The Next Level, “Mega Drive Act Two” Throughout his life, Sonic has shown a great desire for adventure and excitement, which aligns with his super speed.

Sonic is laid-back and confident under pressure, especially in fights, where he often mocks his opponents with insults and puns, engaging in banter that usually distracts and aggravates them.[4]Sonic the Hedgehog #248, “When Worlds Collide Part Three: No Holds Barred”[5]Sonic the Hedgehog #271, “Champions Finale: The One Left Standing”[6]Sonic the Hedgehog #276, “Cold Hearted”[7]Sonic the Hedgehog #286, “Panic in the Sky Part Three: Colossal Crash” However, in moments of great loss, such as when Chip departed to the planet’s core to remain with Dark Gaia,[8]Sonic the Hedgehog #287, “Panic In The Sky: Finale – As Was Foretold” his macho and carefree appearance can falter. Nonetheless, Sonic never dwells on the past or lets painful experiences weigh him down; instead, he chooses to live in the present and always looks forward to his next adventure, holding no regrets for what has transpired.[9]Sonic Universe #90, “Shattered Finale: Restoration”

In line with his footloose lifestyle, Sonic values freedom above all else and strives to live according to his own rules rather than the standards of others or for the sake of heroism and duty. Despite his loyalty to his friends and allies, Sonic is typically reluctant to commit to anything that requires acting primarily under the authority of others, including his friends, believing he knows what is best for himself. He almost never sticks to Sally’s plans, which has caused him to act recklessly and get into trouble, but he always comes through for his team in the end.[10]Sonic the Hedgehog #277, “Thunder, Rain, and Lightning”

Sonic is rather charismatic, easily getting along with others and making new friends. He can also forgive and become friendly with those he previously distrusted, as seen when he quickly forgave Mega Man after they had been trying to destroy each other just moments before, much to the boy robot’s surprise.[11]Mega Man #25, “When Worlds Collide Part Four: Through the Looking Glass”

If Sonic has a flaw besides recklessness and a disregard for authority, it is that, like his friend Mighty, he tends to take too much upon himself. When he inhaled a concentrated dose of Dark Gaia energy and began showing signs of change,[12]Sonic the Hedgehog #254, “Countdown to Chaos Part Two: The Soldier”[13]Sonic the Hedgehog #257, “Damage Control”[14]Sonic the Hedgehog #263, “Waves of Change Part Four: Divine Waters” he brushed them off and insisted he was fine despite his friends’ concerns, until he eventually succumbed to the full transformation. He also enjoys teasing some of his friends, most notably Knuckles,[15]Sonic the Hedgehog #271, “Champions Finale: The One Left Standing” although he knows where to draw the line between teasing and mocking, reserving the latter for his enemies.

Powers and Abilities

Sonic’s most notable ability is his incredible super speed, allowing him to cruise at speeds far surpassing Mach 1, which is at the blistering speed of 768 mph or more. While his top speed is unknown, glimpses of Sonic’s prowess are shown in his ability to routinely scale vertical walls, effortlessly knock down enemies in his path, run over water, plow straight through foes, and even cause the ground to explode in his wake. He is also stated to be the fastest thing alive in his world.[19]Sonic the Hedgehog #277, “Sonic Grams”

Sonic has demonstrated complete mastery of his speed at any level. Not only can he run at maximum tilt in straight lines, but he can also navigate tight circles and sharp turns with full control over his momentum, avoiding reckless crashes into unintended targets. However, he does have trouble keeping his balance when coming to a sudden halt at full speed. Sonic’s stamina seems limitless, as he is never winded from running. He can also generate strong winds with high-speed movements to attack opponents, similar to aerokinesis.

In addition to his speed, Sonic possesses extreme acrobatic skills, agility, and reflexes. These abilities complement his speed, allowing him to avoid sizable and minuscule obstacles with precise jumps and delicate movements, regardless of their proximity and incoming speed.

Sonic is incredibly resilient to pain and damage, capable of enduring beatings from a wide range of adversaries without lasting injuries. He is also a skilled fighter and adept at hand-to-hand combat. Even during his earlier adventures, he could single-handedly take on hordes of Eggman’s robots. Like Shadow, Sonic can use the power of the Chaos Emeralds to perform Chaos Control, enabling him to teleport to other locations.

Sonic’s primary offensive maneuver is the Spin Dash, a technique in which he curls into a concussive ball or cutting disk to damage, destroy, mow down, or burrow through various obstacles or foes. He also has an aerial variant called the “Homing Attack,” where he homes in on a target from midair while in spinball form. Additionally, Sonic can grind along rails and move down them at high speeds.

Transformations

Super Sonic

Main article: Super Sonic (Archie)

By absorbing the seven Chaos Emeralds, Sonic can transform into Super Sonic. In this state, his natural talents are exponentially increased, granting him the ability to fly, invulnerability, and the power to manipulate Chaos energy at will.

Sonic the Werehog

Main article: Sonic the Werehog (Archie)

When Sonic accidentally inhaled a concentrated dose of Dark Gaia energy, he involuntarily gained the ability to transform into Sonic the Werehog, a mutated version of his original form. In this form, Sonic possesses increased strength, elastic arms, and sharp claws. Initially, the corruptive influence of the energy caused him to become extremely violent and aggressive. However, he later learned to exert control over himself while in this form. Exposure to sunlight causes Sonic to automatically revert back to his normal hedgehog form.

Sonic Man

Main article: Sonic Man (Roboticized Master)

When subjected to Dr. Eggman and Dr. Wily’s specialized roboticization procedure, Sonic was transformed into the Roboticized Master known as Sonic Man. In this form, although deprived of his free will, Sonic can overpower multiple Robot Masters simultaneously. His speed is greatly enhanced to the extent that time-slowing powers have no noticeable effect on him. Additionally, he gains the ability to use a variety of Special Weapons.

Relationships

Dr. Eggman

Sonic’s archenemy is the diabolical Dr. Eggman, whose attempts at world domination have always been thwarted by Sonic. Despite their mutual dislike and Sonic’s massive streak of victories, there have been occasions where Sonic has had to team up with Eggman for the greater good, such as when the Space Colony ARK was plummeting towards the planet,[20]Sonic Adventure 2/Sonic Adventure 2: Battle and when the super-dimensional tyrant Sigma began wreaking havoc across multiple universes, including Sonic’s.

Even though the two will stop at nothing to defeat each other, Sonic has never really taken his adversary too seriously. He usually approaches his battles with Eggman and his goons lightly, cracking jokes and maintaining full confidence that he will emerge victorious, even when confronted by Eggman’s deadliest forces.

Miles “Tails” Prower

Miles “Tails” Prower is Sonic’s best friend and sidekick, having assisted Sonic on many adventures. Although Sonic’s cocksure attitude sometimes irritates Tails, the two are as close as brothers and always stick by each other’s side, willing to put themselves or anything at risk for those they love and care about.

During the Chaos Emerald Championship, after Tails suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of Honey and grew rather grouchy as a result, Sonic reminded him of his past accomplishments and how little one defeat could compare to them.[21]Sonic the Hedgehog #269, “Champions Part Two: Climbing the Brackets”

Amy Rose

Amy Rose is another one of Sonic’s close friends and also happens to be his self-proclaimed girlfriend. Amy has been an enthusiastic fan of Sonic for a long time, but Sonic does not show as much attraction to her. Her affection for Sonic only grew after he rescued her from Metal Sonic.[22]Sonic the Hedgehog #289, “Genesis of a Hero Part Three: Sonic’s Cease & Desist”[23]Sonic the Hedgehog CD

On occasion, Sonic has been known to affectionately tease Amy for her crush on him; he once teased her when she refused to hug him due to the awful smell he carried from the Burning Ruin Zone.[24]Sonic Universe #75, “Fury” Despite this, he has always viewed her as a dependable, reliable, and trustworthy ally. Sonic has shown faith in her ability to handle herself, such as when she was summoned to Blaze’s world, even though he was unaware of it at the time.

Sally Acorn

In the altered reality, Sonic retains a great fondness for Sally Acorn and feels a notable sense of relief that she is no longer a minion of Eggman’s. While their dynamic friendship remains strong, they do not share a romantic bond.

Antoine D’Coolette

Antoine D’Coolette is another one of Sonic’s friends and teammates. Sonic was happy to see Antoine recovered and healthy when meeting up with him. Additionally, Sonic is credited with helping Antoine gain the courage he needed to protect the kingdom.[25]Sonic Super Digest #9, “Sonic Comic Origins: Little Lost Soldier”

Bunnie D’Coolette

Bunnie D’Coolette is also a friend of Sonic’s. She was initially depressed when she became a cyborg, but Sonic and his fellow Freedom Fighters helped her through those tough times. They showed her that she was still herself, which both prompted and inspired her to fight alongside her friends and use her cybernetics to her advantage.

Rotor the Walrus

Rotor the Walrus is another intelligent and brawny friend of Sonic’s. He and Sonic have worked together under various conditions. Despite both having good hearts, their attitudes towards missions vary considerably, sometimes leading to arguments. This was evident during their time with Amy on Eusbes Shrine, where Rotor’s pragmatic, no-nonsense attitude clashed with Sonic’s nonchalant, selfless nature.[26]Sonic the Hedgehog #261, “Waves of Change Part Two: Current Events” However, they always support each other in a pinch.

Nicole the Holo-Lynx

Nicole the Holo-Lynx is Sonic’s helpful and trustworthy computer friend. She assisted Sonic in restoring the old memories of Tails, Rotor, Antoine, Bunnie, Amy, and Sally from the original timeline, although she also inadvertently gave Walter Naugus his old memories back as well. Nicole aids the group in her Lynx form, using her abilities to provide essential support and power to the team.

Sir Charles the Hedgehog

Charles the Hedgehog is something of an “uncle”-like figure to Sonic, and someone who Sonic is always happy to see. This was especially the case when they met in the Wood Zone; Sonic was overjoyed to find Chuck fully organic and de-roboticized after the Super Genesis Wave changed reality. Sonic has demonstrated a willingness to protect Chuck at all costs; when Chuck passed out during Sonic’s battle with E-106 Eta, Sonic quickly grew enraged.

Knuckles the Echidna

Knuckles the Echidna is one of Sonic’s greatest rivals and best friends. They have known each other for a long time, but their relationship is somewhat complicated. Sonic and Knuckles are much like oil and water. While Sonic exemplifies the wind, laid-back, cool, and free, Knuckles is the mountain, stern, serious, and unmovable, which causes them to argue a lot. Because of their differing morals, they do not always see eye to eye. Although Knuckles sometimes rebuffs Sonic’s help and claims he could do better, Sonic just rolls with it and is merely glad to assist him.

Sonic always welcomes a challenge from Knuckles and enjoys teasing him for fun because of his serious nature. He will even try to get Knuckles angry so they can fight. Despite their differences, the two of them share a hot-blooded friendship and have joined forces many times.

Shadow the Hedgehog

When Sonic and Shadow the Hedgehog first met, they were enemies, each working against the other’s goals—Sonic aimed to save the world while Shadow sought to destroy it with the Eclipse Cannon. However, upon discovering that his memories had been manipulated, Shadow joined forces with Sonic to save the planet. Since then, they have remained arch-rivals but also comrades, aiding each other on numerous occasions.

When Shadow was presumed dead after the destruction of the Letter of Gabriel, Sonic felt a deep sadness over his arch-rival’s demise and used it as motivation to defeat Sigma, who had indirectly caused Shadow’s apparent death.[27]Mega Man #50, “Worlds Unite Part Four: Death and Destruction” After the timeline was reset, Sonic immediately reached out to check on Shadow and was overjoyed to find him alive.[28]Mega Man #52, “Worlds Unite Part Twelve: Last Rights”

Silver the Hedgehog

Like with Knuckles and Shadow, Sonic’s relationship with Silver the Hedgehog initially got off to a rocky start. The two were enemies, with Silver determined to eliminate Sonic, having been deceived into believing Sonic was responsible for the destruction of his timeline. However, upon realizing he had been misled, Silver joined forces with Sonic and Shadow to confront a super-dimensional threat.[29]Sonic the Hedgehog (2006)

Even though Sonic and Silver are now allies, Silver still tends to get irritated by Sonic’s cheeky attitude, such as when Sonic makes puns during their second encounter with the Ifrit.[30]Sonic the Hedgehog Free Comic Book Day 2015, “Sonic Comic Origins: Into the Unknown” Like Knuckles, Sonic occasionally teases Silver about his core traits, but the two share similar morals and a mutual respect.

Mighty the Armadillo

Mighty the Armadillo is among Sonic’s oldest friends, and the two are close allies despite having not met for some time. According to Mighty, it was Sonic who had previously inspired him to get his act together.[31]Sonic the Hedgehog #266, “Ambushed! Part One”

Sonic and Mighty were reunited when Sonic’s search for the Chaos Emeralds led him to the Rocky Jungle Zone. Later that day, Mighty helped Sonic regain his composure and sanity when the Dark Gaia energy he had swallowed caused him to mutate into the Werehog, a form that allowed him to easily take on the Soumerca Egg Army on his own. Although Mighty still finds Sonic’s ego to be somewhat overwhelming, the two remain respectable and dependable allies who form a formidable team.

Mega Man

Mega Man is a robotic ally of Sonic’s from a different multiverse. Their adventures together have often been under challenging circumstances, such as when their nemeses tricked them into battling each other[32]Sonic Universe #51, “When Worlds Collide Part Two: Mistaken Identities” or when the tyrant Sigma sought to harness the power of both their worlds for his own ambitions.[33]Sonic the Hedgehog #273, “Worlds Unite Part Three: Clash of the Corrupted”

Mega Man’s successful reversal of the Super Genesis Wave’s effects on his world left him without memories of his first encounter with Sonic. Consequently, Sonic had to recount the events of their initial meeting when they reunited. Despite this, they remain dependable allies with a strong bond, particularly from their first adventure together.

Trivia

  • A common mistake in the comics is that Sonic is depicted with his modern appearance in flashback panels, even though he should have his classic look. According to Ian Flynn, as of Sonic the Hedgehog #271, Sonic no longer retains memories of the pre-Super Genesis Wave timeline.[34]Ian Flynn on TwitterTwitter (15 January 2015). Retrieved on 2 June 2015. “MB12g: Will Sonic’s knowledge of the PRE-Super Genesis Wave world affect his upcoming battle with Knuckles ? / Ian Flynn: He doesn’t remember. The pre-wave memories had faded away.”
