SEGA’s chief creative officer for the Sonic the Hedgehog brand, Takashi Iizuka, has confirmed that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds could eventually welcome lesser-known characters from across the Sonic franchise as post-launch DLC, provided the timing and fit make sense.

Since its September 2025 release, the racer has already built a reputation for its expansive crossover roster. Free and paid additions have brought in characters such as Hatsune Miku, Joker from Persona, Ichiban Kasuga from Like a Dragon, NiGHTS, Pac-Man, Minecraft content, and even SpongeBob SquarePants, making it one of SEGA’s most crossover-heavy Sonic titles to date.

Speaking in a new interview with MCV, Iizuka was asked whether more SEGA All-Stars could be added in the future. He explained that the team is always considering new possibilities, noting that Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds is designed as a place to celebrate SEGA’s wider legacy and evolve over time.

More notably, Iizuka directly addressed interest in “deep cut” Sonic characters. When asked about characters from areas such as the “1993 animated TV series”, Sonic Boom, or the IDW comic series, he said the team is open to those ideas if the opportunity feels right. According to Iizuka, the goal is for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds to represent all eras of Sonic, not just the most recognizable faces.

He also clarified that collaborations are chosen carefully. Characters must feel visually distinct and fun, and they need to fit naturally within the game’s world rather than exist solely as promotional tie-ins. While many companies expressed enthusiasm during early discussions, Iizuka acknowledged that not every potential collaboration moved forward, emphasizing that these decisions take time and careful consideration.

With Sonic’s 35th anniversary celebrations underway and more seasonal content planned for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, Iizuka’s comments suggest that the roster may continue to grow in unexpected directions, including characters longtime fans rarely see playable.
