SEGA is officially kicking off celebrations for Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th anniversary, marking another major milestone for one of gaming’s most recognizable icons.

First introduced in 1991, Sonic has spent the last three and a half decades racing across games, films, television, music, and merchandise, growing far beyond his original platforming roots. To open the anniversary year, SEGA has released a new commemorative trailer that looks back on some of Sonic’s most defining moments from across the franchise’s long history.
The 35th anniversary celebrations will run throughout 2026, with SEGA planning a wide range of initiatives centered on fan engagement. These include digital features highlighting Sonic’s evolution, community events and fan meet-ups, exclusive retail and brand collaborations, limited-edition merchandise, museum pop-ups and art exhibitions, live concert events, and a brand-new narrative podcast set within the Sonic universe.
“We’re incredibly proud to celebrate 35 years of our beloved Sonic franchise with our fans,” said Marcella Churchill, Vice President of SEGA/ATLUS Brand Marketing at SEGA of America. “This milestone is not just a reflection of our past, but also a look toward the future as we continue to innovate and grow. We want to bring our community together and create memorable experiences for all our fans throughout 2026!”
Additional anniversary announcements, partnerships, collectibles, and fan-focused experiences will be revealed over the coming months, with further details shared through the official Sonic the Hedgehog 35th Anniversary site as the celebration continues.
