An industry report published back in November, sheds light on how competitive IMAX scheduling has become, with Sonic the Hedgehog 4 already entering that race.
According to the report, producer Neal Moritz traveled to New York to meet directly with IMAX CEO Rich Gelfond, where he presented early, unreleased visuals from Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The goal was to secure IMAX screens for the film’s planned spring 2027 release.
Such pitches are now standard practice for major franchise films, as IMAX screens are limited and often booked years in advance. Studios compete aggressively for those slots due to IMAX’s higher ticket prices and stronger per-screen performance compared to standard formats.
IMAX currently operates approximately 1,759 screens worldwide, including just 424 in the U.S. and Canada, with scheduling tightly controlled. With 2027 already crowded with major releases, the early presentation places Sonic the Hedgehog 4 among the titles actively vying for premium-format placement.
