Sonic the Hedgehog’s 35th anniversary might still be a ways off, but SEGA already seems to be setting the stage for a celebration. With the original Sonic the Hedgehog game debuting in 1991, the big milestone will arrive in 2026—and a new calendar spotted on Amazon may have just given fans an early glimpse of what’s to come.

The calendar itself isn’t particularly flashy—it mostly reuses artwork from previous Sonic games, with Sonic Spinball featured in March, for example. But the cover is where things start to get interesting. It features a brand-new 35th anniversary logo with Sonic’s head alongside the Master Emerald, framed by a bold “35th Anniversary” banner. There’s also an original piece of art showing Sonic giving a thumbs up while floating among the Chaos Emeralds, each reflecting a different character: Tails, Knuckles, Shadow, Amy, Eggman, and Rouge, using familiar artwork to fill in the scene.
While this doesn’t confirm anything regarding new games or merchandise, it’s a clear sign that SEGA is laying the groundwork for the celebration. When Nintendo celebrated Mario’s 35th anniversary in 2020, it did so with a combination of new games, re-releases, and exclusive merch. It wouldn’t be surprising to see SEGA follow a similar model, especially with Sonic’s momentum still going strong.
There’s no official word yet on what kind of games might be on the horizon, but with Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds and Sonic Rumble leading the charge in 2025, 2026 might be the perfect time to revisit traditional Sonic gameplay. That could mean a follow-up to Sonic Frontiers or perhaps a new 2D title in the style of Sonic Superstars. Whether SEGA chooses to go big with new game announcements or instead leans into nostalgic merchandise and media, the anniversary is shaping up to be an exciting moment for fans of all ages.
Sonic’s journey hasn’t always been smooth, but recent years have seen the series bounce back in a big way. The Paramount movie franchise has brought in a new generation of fans, while also rekindling nostalgia for longtime players. With the brand now firing on all cylinders across games, film, TV, and merchandise, 2026 offers the perfect opportunity to honor Sonic’s legacy while setting the stage for what’s next.
Whether you’re a veteran fan or new to the franchise, the signs are pointing toward a memorable 35th anniversary packed with energy, celebration, and maybe even a few surprises.
