Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has been a monumental success since its late 2024 release. However, after its sixth full weekend in theaters, the film has finally dropped out of the box office’s top five. On Wednesday, January 22, the movie landed in the #6 spot, earning $455,000 for the day. It now trails behind One of Them Days ($886,000) and Mufasa: The Lion King ($717,000).
Despite this dip, Sonic 3 boasts impressive achievements. The film has grossed $225.9 million domestically and $220.5 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $446.4 million.
Since its pre-Christmas debut, the movie has climbed several box office charts:
- Second-highest-grossing video game adaptation: Sonic 3 has surpassed both Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2. However, it still lags behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which earned a staggering $1.3 billion globally.
- Top 10 domestic hits of 2024: Currently ranked at #9 with $220 million, it sits ahead of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire ($196 million) but trails Twisters ($267 million).
The movie’s success has further cemented the Sonic franchise’s dominance, while boosting the profiles of its stars, including James Marsden, Keanu Reeves, and Idris Elba.
The franchise shows no signs of slowing down. Paramount has already slated Sonic the Hedgehog 4 for release on March 19, 2027. While plot details are being kept under wraps, Sonic 3‘s post-credits scene teased the arrival of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic.
No new spin-offs have been officially announced yet, but fans are buzzing with hope for more of Keanu Reeves’ Shadow, possibly alongside another major Sonic character. Following the success of Idris Elba’s Knuckles series on Paramount+, another spin-off seems likely to resonate with audiences.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is still playing in theaters, so catch it on the big screen while you can! Stay tuned to Sonic City for all the latest updates on the Sonic Movie franchise’s future!
