Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has claimed the top spot at the U.K. and Ireland box office, debuting with an impressive £11.7 million ($14.7 million) opening weekend, according to Comscore. The highly anticipated sequel outpaced its competition, including Disney’s Mufasa: The Lion King, which brought in £4.2 million in its second weekend, pushing its total to £12.6 million.

In third place, Universal’s Wicked continued its strong performance, earning £2.7 million in its sixth week and reaching an impressive £53 million overall. Disney’s Moana 2 followed closely with £2.2 million in its fifth week, achieving a cumulative total of £33.7 million.

Other notable performances included the debut of Better Man, a Robbie Williams biopic from Entertainment Film Distributors, which secured fifth place with £1.5 million. Studiocanal’s Paddington in Peru added £819,038 in its eighth week, crossing the £33 million mark.

Paramount’s Gladiator II took seventh place, earning £561,662 in its seventh week for a total of £30.3 million. Black Bear’s Conclave added £364,319 in its fifth week, reaching £5.5 million, while Bollywood’s Baby John debuted in ninth place with £112,834. Rounding out the top ten, Sony’s Kraven the Hunter brought in £87,631 in its third week, reaching £1.4 million.

The new year brings an exciting slate of films to theaters. Universal’s Nosferatu, a reimagining of the horror classic by Robert Eggers, leads the pack with a January 1 release. Also debuting are Studiocanal’s romantic drama We Live In Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, and Asif Kapadia’s sci-fi thriller 2073, distributed by Altitude Film Distribution.

Midweek releases include the Tamil drama Vanangaan from auteur Bala, Dreamz Entertainment’s sports biopic Game Changer starring Ram Charan, and Curzon’s Nickel Boys, based on Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Additional offerings include the Polish action film Diabel by Magnetes Pictures and BFI Distribution’s re-release of Luchino Visconti’s Italian classic Rocco and His Brothers.

With Sonic the Hedgehog 3 off to a strong start and a diverse lineup of films entering the market, the U.K. and Ireland box office is poised for an exciting start to 2025.
