The Sonic the Hedgehog franchise is celebrated not only for its thrilling gameplay but also for its iconic music. Among the most beloved tracks is “Live and Learn” by Crush 40, originally featured in Sonic Adventure 2 for the Sega Dreamcast. Closely tied to Shadow the Hedgehog, this song has remained a fan favorite since its release. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 pays homage to this legacy by integrating the track into the film, evoking nostalgia for long-time fans.

In an exclusive interview with ComicBook, director Jeff Fowler discussed the intentional inclusion of “Live and Learn” and how it was woven into the movie. “Honestly, everything that’s in this third movie was very purposely there,” Fowler shared. “I think ‘Live and Learn’ and Crush 40 are such inseparable elements from Sonic Adventure 2. We just knew that was essential to this film.”

Fowler credited composer Tom Holkenborg for skillfully incorporating the song into the movie’s score. From the opening scene, where Maria Robotnik strums the iconic melody on her guitar, to Shadow’s climactic moments, “Live and Learn” is threaded throughout the film, ensuring its presence resonates deeply with fans.

Sonic Adventure 2 introduced Shadow and laid the foundation for his story, much of which inspired the movie. While some narrative elements were adapted to fit the cinematic universe of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, core themes—such as Shadow’s bond with Maria Robotnik—remain central. Fowler revealed that tying “Live and Learn” to Maria added an emotional and personal layer, bridging the gap between the game’s lore and the film’s narrative.

Despite the song’s prominent role in the movie, its future use remains uncertain. Crush 40’s Johnny Gioeli recently filed a lawsuit against Sega, claiming ownership of the “master recording and composition” of the track. Gioeli alleges Sega used the song in various titles, including the Super Smash Bros. series, without his consent. While Paramount successfully licensed the track for the movie, this legal dispute raises concerns about its availability in future Sonic media.
