Amidst a backdrop of thriving games and enduring franchises, Sonic the Hedgehog appears to be encountering a period of adversity.

SEGA disclosed its financial performance for the nine-month period concluding in December 2023, revising its sales and profit projections downward, citing “weak sales” of new titles as the primary factor. Among these, Sonic Superstars notably struggled, experiencing sluggish sales throughout the holiday season.

This downturn reflects a year-on-year decline for the Sonic franchise, with sales dropping from 6.75 million units in the corresponding quarter of 2023 to 5.05 million in the current fiscal quarter. Notably, Sonic Frontiers served as the flagship title during the same quarter last year, rendering comparisons to this holiday season particularly challenging.
