Past
At some point, Sonic encountered a baby fox cub searching for a family. The cub asked to live with Sonic, who initially dismissed him and ran off. However, Sonic was amazed to see the baby fox fly and keep up with him. When Sonic accidentally fell off a cliff, the fox cub saved him. Grateful, Sonic invited the cub to stay with him. Overwhelmed with excitement, the fox dropped Sonic. While being carried, Sonic asked for the cub’s name, who reluctantly revealed it was “Miles,” a name he disliked. Sonic then gave him the nickname “Tails”[11]Shelly, Bruce; Shelly, Reed (7 September 1993). “Tails’ New Home”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 16. and later adopted him as his younger brother. Sonic also made friends with others, including Professor Von Schlemmer and Hacker, but his main adversary became Dr. Ivo Robotnik, who sought to conquer Mobius. Despite Robotnik’s numerous attempts to destroy Sonic with various machines, Sonic always managed to thwart them.
Recently, Sonic and Tails arrived in a village gripped with fear. They encountered Dragon Breath, who was searching for a bounty hunter convention. Sonic decided to attend the convention to disrupt Dr. Robotnik’s speech to his bounty hunter Badniks. Disguised, Sonic mingled with the crowd and later revealed himself, tugging Robotnik’s mustache before fleeing. He then hid Tails and disguised himself as a ringmaster, leading some bounty hunters over a cliff. Sonic handed a rope to Davy Sprocket and Arms, running with it to drag the robots into a rock wall. He then faced Dragon Breath, disguised as Walter Tell, and defeated him by causing a tree to fall on him. After defeating the bounty hunters, Sonic left with Tails.
Later, Sonic and Tails stopped by a chili dog stand, which transformed into a robot controlled by Coconuts. They fled as the robot fired at them, but Sonic directed the robot’s cannons into its cockpit, causing it to self-destruct. While napping, Grounder arrived and threw a pumpkin at Sonic, making him dizzy. Sonic chased Grounder but grabbed a rope Scratch tried to use to drop a brick wall on him. Sonic used the rope to hit Scratch while Grounder crashed into the wall, then left.
Soon after, Sonic was lured by an inflatable doll disguised as a girl. Scratch hit Sonic with a rock and threw him into a hole with Grounder’s help. Sonic used his Triple Spin to escape and disguised himself as a doctor, tricking Scratch and Grounder into letting him examine them. He then knocked them into the hole he had been trapped in. Later, Sonic surrendered to save Tails from Grounder and was locked in a cage. When Coconuts arrived, Sonic tricked him into throwing Scratch and Grounder into the cage, then escaped and trapped Coconuts inside. As Robotnik flew in, Sonic created a dust storm by running around the cage, then used Grounder’s phone to contact Robotnik, causing him to crash into his own robots. Sonic and Tails then escaped.[12]Shelly, Bruce; Shelly, Reed (6 October 1993). “Super Special Sonic Search & Smash Squad”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 1.
Season 1
One day, while Sonic and Tails were running, they were trapped by Scratch and Grounder. Sonic decided to tell them the story of how he and Tails first met to highlight their bond. After hearing the story, Sonic managed to free himself and Tails, and they escaped.
Later, Sonic and Tails were running through Marble Zone when Scratch and Grounder started chasing them again. Disguised as a miner, Sonic jumped into a geyser with Tails, which erupted and blew Scratch and Grounder away. Continuing their journey, Sonic and Tails discovered a treasury owned by Spelunk, who was hostile towards intruders and fired a cannonball at them. Sonic grabbed Tails, and they ran away, eventually losing the cannonball in the corridors. They found a railroad and followed it upward, but Spelunk chased them in his rail cart. When they encountered a turtle family crossing the railroad, Sonic disguised himself as a crossing guard, allowing the turtles to pass safely and stopping Spelunk.
As they escaped along a spiraling cliff, Spelunk triggered a trap that made the ground slippery, causing Sonic and Tails to slide into a Diamondius cage, which even Sonic couldn’t cut through. While they were trapped, the cave ceiling began to collapse. Spelunk opened a hatch under their feet, leading to a deep chasm. Holding onto the cage bars, Sonic and Tails were freed when a crystal from the ceiling destroyed the cage. Robotnik, Scratch, and Grounder then fell into the cave and into the chasm. After bidding the villains farewell, Sonic and Tails tried to exit the cave but found the exit had collapsed. Sonic saved Spelunk from a falling boulder, which changed Spelunk’s attitude. Sonic then dug through the collapsed exit, allowing them to escape.
As they navigated the corridors, Sonic used Diamondius treads from Spelunk’s clothes to stop moving maces blocking a tunnel. After clearing the tunnel, Sonic repaired Spelunk’s clothes and returned them. Outside, they found Robotnik, Scratch, and Grounder stealing Spelunk’s treasure. Disguising himself as a tax collector, Sonic tied Scratch and Grounder with a receipt and threw them onto a conveyor belt leading to Robotnik’s Egg-O-Matic, which Spelunk then detonated. With the villains defeated, Spelunk promised Sonic and Tails some chili dogs.[13]Askin, Robert (16 September 1993). “Subterranean Sonic”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 2.
Sometime later, Sonic and Tails were about to set up camp when Sonic heard a cry for help. Scratch and Grounder had captured a female hedgehog named Breezie. To rescue her, Sonic disguised himself as a photographer and tricked Scratch and Grounder into stepping into glue he had spilled. With the robots immobilized, Sonic freed Breezie. Sonic quickly fell in love with Breezie and eagerly fulfilled her every wish. He opened an umbrella for her, fetched flowers from the Mobisia Marvelosa Marigoldias Garden, and brought chili dogs from Chef Charlemaine in the Ice Territory. Despite Tails’ warning about Breezie’s true nature, Sonic continued to please her until Scratch and Grounder trapped him using a treadmill and magnet. Breezie, however, saved Sonic, who then took her away from the giant crusher Scratch and Grounder intended to use. Breezie confessed she was a robot created by Robotnik to eliminate Sonic but informed him about Robotnik’s plan to steal water from the Mobius Reservoir. Sonic foiled Robotnik’s plan by pulling the Egg-O-Matic Tunnelizer away from the reservoir. Later, Sonic was cheered up by a letter from Breezie.[14]Shelly, Bruce; Shelly, Reed (15 September 1993). “Lovesick Sonic”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 3.
Sonic later saved the Sloth Family from an attack by Scratch and Grounder, which was a distraction allowing Robotnik to zap Sonic with the Subatomic Slow-go Beam Weapon. Tails and Rocket the Sloth saved Sonic, and the heroes used a reversed beam on Robotnik, making him uncontrollably fast. Sonic disposed of the Mobian Mega Crystal, which powered the weapon.[15]Hanrahan, Jack; Burian-Mohr, Eleanor (28 September 1993). “Slowwww Going”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 4.
In the Casino Night Zone, Sonic stopped Robotnik’s plan to enslave Gambler Sheep but discovered Tails had been kidnapped. Forced to lose a race against Grounder for Tails’ safety, Sonic ultimately saved his friend, won the race, and liberated Robotnik’s slaves.[16]Askin, Robert (20 September 1993). “High Stakes Sonic”. Sonic and Tails discovered that Sketch Lampoon, the creator of Crack Ups, had been kidnapped by Robotnik. Allowing himself to be captured, Sonic ended up in a special prison cell but escaped by tricking Scratch and Grounder. He freed Lampoon and caused the prison to self-destruct.[17]Purgason, Douglas Zip (2 November 1993). “Sonic Breakout”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 6.
Later, Sonic learned that Tails had been kidnapped by Dr. Warpnik, Robotnik’s crazy cousin. Warpnik lured Sonic to the Warp of Confusion to get revenge on Robotnik. After Robotnik arrived and fought with Warpnik, Sonic and Tails escaped the Warp of Confusion before its entrance was destroyed.[18]Forward, Bob (19 October 1993). “Trail of the Missing Tails”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 7.
Sonic and Tails witnessed a spaceship crash and found two aliens, Charnock and Splorg, whose ship was caught in Robotnik’s trap. They needed to repair the ship quickly, as Charnock’s coronation was imminent. Sonic and Tails fixed the ship, thwarted Robotnik’s plan, and sent the aliens home just in time.[19]Purgason, Douglas Zip (20 October 1993). “Close Encounter of the Sonic Kind”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 8.
Sonic and Tails saw Scratch and Grounder destroying Mobius National Park with Tree-Killer Robots. Disguised as a mechanic, Sonic reprogrammed the robots to turn against Scratch and Grounder. Sonic also stopped them from destroying a town with another disguise. Later, Sonic saved Tails from a trap set by Momma Robotnik, who wanted to use Tails as bait to catch Sonic. After defeating Fuzzy Wuzzy, Sonic saw Momma Robotnik returned to her home by staff.[20]Moss, Francis (27 September 1993). “Momma Robotnik’s Birthday”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 9.
When Robotnik prepared to launch a rocket piloted by Scratch and Grounder, Sonic and Tails stowed away. Despite broken controls, Sonic managed to crash the rocket into an abandoned space station. They encountered a sick Space Monster who wanted to eat them. After Robotnik tried to strand them by destroying the escape pod, Sonic and Tails built a new one using parts from Scratch and Grounder. Sonic convinced the Space Monster to propel them back to Mobius by sneezing. They watched as the monster chased Robotnik, whom Sonic had promised as a meal.[21]Bruce, Shelly; Reed, Shelly (4 October 1993). “Spaceman Sonic”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 33.
Sonic Christmas Blast
Over the holiday season, Sonic enlisted Tails’ help to pick out Christmas presents for Sally, anticipating she would go back on their agreement not to get each other anything. Upon arriving in Robotropolis, they discovered that all the stores were understocked because Dr. Robotnik had taken over for the retiring Santa Claus. Sonic soon realized that the retiring Santa was a fake created by Robotnik. To get answers, he disguised himself as a trash collector and sought information from Grounder and Scratch.
Sonic and Tails managed to free the real Santa, who had been imprisoned by Robotnik. Sonic learned that the ring he had received as a gift the previous Christmas held the secret to ultimate speed. Despite interference from Robotnik’s henchbots, Sonic breezed through a series of three tests, unlocking this power. Using his enhanced speed, he reclaimed the presents stolen by Robotnik and redistributed them to all the children of Mobius, including Sally. As a reward, Sonic was officially appointed as the new Santa Claus, dubbed “Sonic Claus” by Tails.
Personality
Sonic loves to move at super speed and cannot stand moving slowly. In addition to running, he enjoys fast race cars and roller coasters. He can be impatient and often calls slow people, usually his enemies, “slow-mo’s.” Sonic takes great pride in his speed and his title of “the fastest thing alive,” becoming angered if someone mocks his speed or calls him slow.
Sonic is not just quick on his feet but also quick-witted. He frequently comes up with plans and disguises on the spot, using his smarts and impressive speed to outsmart the devious Dr. Robotnik. He is very brave, rarely showing fear in dangerous situations, and is also adventurous, loving to see new places and never staying in one place for long.
Sonic is very compassionate and loves to help good people, although he can get annoyed if someone tries to help him, fearing it will put them both in danger. His temper can sometimes get the better of him, as with Captain Rescue, but he usually apologizes later, showing that he doesn’t mean to get angry.
Sonic has a mischievous sense of humor, often toying with Robotnik and his minions. Despite his mischievous attitude, he is portrayed as a responsible role model for the innocent Tails, often giving advice when the young fox faces difficult situations.
Sonic has been depicted as quite a casanova, evidenced by his many romances. He calls girls “babes” and flirts with every attractive girl he meets, but he is also courteous and a gentleman. He has a penchant for saying rhyming catchphrases, usually before taking off running, such as “Let’s speed, keed!”
Sonic loves risky things and often puts himself in danger, though he is usually clever enough to recognize when he is near a trap. However, his love of pretty girls can easily distract him, sometimes without realizing when they are working against him. When in love, Sonic will do anything a girl asks, even if it involves running around Mobius several times.
While Sonic enjoys helping people and will do whatever they ask, he does not seem to have the same feelings toward babies, showing disdain at the idea of babysitting. He almost refused to care for the babies Becky, Bucky, and Chucky when asked. Additionally, years ago, he nearly left a young Tails alone, although he later accepted the fox cub after the latter saved his life.
Powers and Abilities
Sonic’s greatest strength is his super speed. According to Captain John Paul Memo, Sonic is in a class of his own with his speed[22]Scott, Jeffrey (26 November 1993). “The Little Merhog”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 56. and is credited as “the fastest thing alive” on Mobius. While his top speed is unknown, he can run fast enough to travel around Mobius within a matter of minutes.[23]Murphy, Kevin; Ferrera, Ed (8 November 1993). “Mass Transit Trouble”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 42. Due to his speed, Sonic is able to run over water and outrun various forms of projectiles without a problem.[24]Butterworth, Kent (Unaired). “Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog pilot”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Sonic can also run fast enough to create trails of fire with the friction from his speed.[25]Goren, Rowby (8 October 1993). “Zoobotnik”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 40. In addition, he can move fast enough to create strong, blue gusts of wind by running or generate a blue hurricane by spinning around.
To match his speed, Sonic has reflexes and precision that let him avoid obstacles and predict others’ moves. In addition to his speed, Sonic also possesses impressive strength. He is able to lift a massive brick wall, send an alligator flying backward with a single kick, lift Scratch into the air and slam him on the ground repeatedly with one arm,[26]Clark, Cydne; Granat, Steve (29 September 1993). “So Long Sucker”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 20. and carry people while running without their weight slowing him down. He also has incredible jumping skills, capable of jumping several meters into the air, even while carrying extra weight.[27]Scott, Jeffrey (26 October 1993). “Black Bot the Pirate”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 48.
Sonic’s core offensive maneuver is the Triple Spin, a technique where he curls into a saw-like ball and directs himself at his targets. With this move, he can shred or burrow through nearly any substance given enough speed and hit with enough force to pierce colossal boulders. Sonic is also an incredibly efficient burrower; by cutting into the ground while spinning, he can dig through the underground at such speed that he can burrow directly through Mobius in less than twelve seconds. However, this move is ineffective against hard materials such as Diamondius.
Sonic is also a master of disguise and often uses a variety of costumes to foil Robotnik’s schemes. His disguises are made all the more effective thanks to the extreme gullibility and stupidity of the doctor’s minions, and some of these disguises even fool Robotnik himself.
Sonic is shown to be an experienced builder, able to relocate cannons, build entire train rails,[28]Askin, Robert (12 November 1993). “Full Tilt Tails”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 30. a race car,[29]Scott, Jeffrey (17 November 1993). “The Mobius 5000”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 55. a fountain disguised as a huge slot machine, and even a spaceship, all of it in just seconds.
While not frequently showcased, Sonic can use his singing voice as a means to condescend, distract, or lull his enemies. For instance, he sang a lullaby to Black Bot the Pirate in an attempt to make him fall from the mast of his ship and onto the deck. During an early adventure in the episode “Boogey-Mania,” he (in his Dr. Pimento disguise) sang a lullaby to Robotnik (while accompanied by the music of a music box) to put him to sleep so Sonic could place the Dream-A-Ma-Jig on Robotnik’s head. Robotnik was asleep for a while after this.
Weaknesses
While Sonic loves speed and is always in motion, he has a limit to his stamina. If he runs at full speed for too long, he can collapse from exhaustion. Additionally, he requires special footwear while running; otherwise, his feet are quickly injured by the intense heat and friction generated by his speed and foot movement.
Sonic’s fondness for women means that he can easily be distracted or manipulated by beautiful girls.
Sonic is shown to be allergic to poisonous flowers, most of which are grown in Poison Flower Valley. If he makes contact with them, he will itch dreadfully and swell up like a balloon.[30]Macgillvray, Cliff (10 September 1993). “Pseudo Sonic”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 22.
Despite being skilled with his own trajectory and momentum, Sonic has terrible aim with firearms, literally being incapable of hitting the broad side of a barn.
Relationships
Miles “Tails” Prower
But even if you’re never as fast as me, you’re the greatest, keed! You’re a great flyer, a great guy, and above all, the greatest friend I could ever hope for!
Sonic the Hedgehog, “Full Tilt Tails”
Miles “Tails” Prower is Sonic’s best friend, sidekick, and adoptive younger brother. Sonic first met Tails when he was just a baby. Initially indifferent, Sonic decided to adopt him because he was homeless and lost in the wilds. Sonic was also impressed by Tails’ two tails, his ability to fly, and his speed. They later developed a great bond.
Sonic acts as a parental figure to Tails, guiding him on what is right and wrong. He often keeps Tails out of battles with the Super Special Sonic Search and Smash Squad to protect him, although Tails frequently disobeys. To manage this, Sonic sometimes threatens to reveal Tails’ true name, “Miles Prower,” which the fox dislikes. Since meeting Tails, Sonic has become very dependent on his company. When he thought he had to leave Tails with his supposed parents, he felt sad and lonely. Sonic also worries about Tails when he is kidnapped and will go to great lengths to rescue him, even facing unknown dangers.
Despite the troubles Tails causes, Sonic respects him and is confident that Tails will become a true hero when he grows up.
Dr. Ivo Robotnik
There’s nothing you can do here in the real world that’ll scare us, Robotnik!
Sonic the Hedgehog, “Sonically Ever After”
Dr. Ivo Robotnik is Sonic’s hated arch-nemesis. Sonic has a profound sense of justice and harbors a deep mutual hatred for Robotnik and his evil plans to take over Mobius. Whenever Robotnik devises a scheme to conquer Mobius, Sonic is always there to thwart him. Sonic also instinctively blames Robotnik for any misfortune that occurs, suspecting him as the culprit behind every sinister event.
Sonic is often frank and taunting towards Robotnik, seizing every opportunity to mock him with jokes and sarcasm. At times, Sonic finds Robotnik more ridiculous than threatening; for instance, after defeating Robotnik and seeing him crying in the ruins of his destroyed Rot-Your-Life-Away Dungeons, Sonic remarked that nothing could make Robotnik appear more ridiculous than he already was. Nonetheless, Sonic remains vigilant about Robotnik’s actions and grows concerned when the doctor doesn’t appear for a while, indicating a potential new scheme.[31]Forward, Bob (9 September 1993). “Submerged Sonic”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 26.
Despite Robotnik’s malevolent deeds, Sonic is content with merely stopping him rather than seeking to eliminate him permanently. However, Robotnik’s resilience and refusal to give up ensure that he always returns with a new plan, leading to a continuous cycle of conflict between them. This perpetual struggle makes it nearly impossible for either Sonic or Robotnik to achieve a definitive victory over the other, resulting in an endless battle.
Scratch and Grounder
Scratch and Grounder are Dr. Robotnik’s minions and, by extension, Sonic’s enemies. These robots relentlessly attempt to capture Sonic, whether on Robotnik’s orders or just for their own amusement. Despite their efforts, Sonic always manages to outsmart and defeat them with ease, often tricking them into their own failures. He finds enjoyment in outwitting Scratch and Grounder and usually laughs at their misfortunes.
However, Sonic recognizes that Scratch and Grounder pose a genuine threat to both himself and his friends. This compels him to take them seriously and ensure their defeat at all costs. The ongoing conflict between Sonic and these robots is marked by a cyclical pattern; despite being defeated repeatedly, Scratch and Grounder are always repaired and return to challenge Sonic again. This endless cycle means that Sonic’s battles with them are never truly over, as they continually come back for another round.
Coconuts
Unlike Scratch and Grounder, Coconuts is not directly hostile towards Sonic. Instead, his primary motivation for targeting Sonic is the hope of receiving a promotion from Dr. Robotnik. Nevertheless, due to the dangerous threat Coconuts poses to others, Sonic has no choice but to confront and defeat him.
Coconuts has occasionally managed to fool Sonic and nearly led him into peril. Despite these close calls, Sonic finds Coconuts just as ridiculous as the other villains he faces and often laughs at his misfortunes.
Similar to Scratch and Grounder, Coconuts is easily repaired, ensuring that their conflict never truly ends. Regardless of how many times he is defeated, Coconuts always returns for another attempt at capturing Sonic, perpetuating their ongoing rivalry.
Wes Weasely
Sonic the Hedgehog, “Hero of the Year”
Sonic holds a neutral relationship with the salesman, Wes Weasely. Initially, Wes was one of Sonic’s enemies but later became his ally after betraying Dr. Robotnik. Wes’s loyalty fluctuated over time; he once helped Coconuts[32]Purgason, Douglas Zip (25 October 1993). “The Magic Hassle”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 37. and later assisted Sonic in sabotaging the Pinball Fortress.[33]Forward, Bob (14 October 1993). “Attack on Pinball Fortress”. Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog. Season 1. Episode 41. Ultimately, Wes was ordered by Robotnik to capture Sonic at the Hero of the Year ceremony. After being betrayed by Robotnik, Wes decided to save Sonic, declaring he had enough of helping villains. Despite this, Sonic still does not fully trust Wes, suspecting him of ulterior motives during the Hero of the Year ceremony.[34]Shelly, Bruce; Shelly, Reed (3 December 1993). “Hero of the Year”. Trivia
- This incarnation of Sonic was largely based on the version seen on the Western box art of the existing Mega Drive Sonic games, leading to several divergences from his established Japanese design. Changes include a mohawk-like single row of spines on his head instead of three rows, a two-spined single row down his back instead of two single-spine rows, and the lack of a tail. This design was carried over into the subsequent Western Sonic cartoons, the “Sonic the Hedgehog” animated series and “Sonic Underground,” and adapted for the first eleven issues of the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series.
- According to Sonic himself, he weighed two pounds and three ounces when he was born. This is the first incarnation of Sonic to be voiced by Jaleel White. In some localizations of the show, particularly the Asian ones, Sonic is voiced by a female actress.
