New reports suggest that Jim Carrey may be set to return as Doctor Eggman in Sonic the Hedgehog 4, potentially placing him back at the center of the story.
According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Carrey is reportedly already filming scenes for the upcoming sequel. The claim has not been officially confirmed by Paramount Pictures or SEGA, but it follows earlier reports that the actor was in discussions to return.
The report raises questions following the ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where Robotnik appeared to sacrifice himself during the Eclipse Cannon sequence after briefly switching sides to help stop the destruction of Earth.
Despite that, the series has a track record of bringing the character back after apparent defeats, leaving room for another return.
If the report proves accurate, Robotnik could once again take on a central antagonist role in the next film. One of the biggest threads still in play is Metal Sonic, who appeared in the post-credits scene of Sonic 3 and is widely expected to play a major role moving forward.
Fan theories have already started circulating. Some point to the possibility of time travel elements, especially if the film draws inspiration from Sonic the Hedgehog CD. Others suggest Robotnik may have survived or could return in a different form.
There is also speculation that he could be tied directly to Metal Sonic’s creation, mirroring the character’s origins in the games and setting up the next major conflict.
The film is also expected to feature Amy Rose, further fueling theories that Sonic CD could influence the story. For now, plot details remain under wraps.
At this stage, Carrey’s return has not been officially confirmed, and no casting announcement has been made. Filming for Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has already begun according to director Jeff Fowler, with a theatrical release set for March 19, 2027.
Until confirmed, the report should betaken with a massive grain of salt.
