SEGA has announced a major update for Sonic Rumble, bringing new gameplay features and a limited-time crossover event with The Smurfs beginning March 16, 2026.
The update arrives as Version 1.5.0 and will relaunch the game under the new name Sonic Rumble Party, introducing several new gameplay systems aimed at expanding the multiplayer party experience.

One of the headline additions is Party Rumble, a new mode designed for fast, accessible matches. The mode features quick, single-round minigames where up to eight players compete in short sessions rather than longer tournaments.

More than 30 new minigames are being introduced with the update. Activities range from high-speed skateboard races and Chao collecting challenges to obstacle survival arenas and stage pose competitions. The new mode is intended to provide a casual alternative while traditional modes such as Ring Survival remain available for more competitive play.

Another major addition is the Toy Capsules reward system. As players complete rounds, they fill a meter that unlocks Toy Capsules containing various items. These capsules may reward skin fragments, seasonal score bonuses, and collectible puzzle pieces.

Puzzle pieces can be combined to complete themed puzzles that grant additional prizes such as Red Star Rings. Capsule rarity can also increase when opened, offering chances at more valuable rewards.
Version 1.5.0 also introduces several gameplay adjustments and quality-of-life improvements. Red Star Rings will now be obtainable through the free Season Pass, daily attempts in the Claw Machine minigame have increased from one to four per day, and improvements have been made to the Friends system. Rewards tied to Crew Score Missions and Clash of the Crews events are also receiving expanded payouts.

As part of the overhaul, several existing features will be retired. Modes such as Special Rumbles and Quick Rumbles, along with Amy’s Requests and Dr. Eggman’s Challenges, will be removed as the developers shift the game toward its new party-style structure.
Alongside the gameplay changes, SEGA confirmed a limited-time crossover event with The Smurfs. Running from March 16 through April 15, the collaboration will introduce exclusive Smurfs-themed skins available through the Event Pass and the Red Star Ring Shop. Special collaboration stages will also appear during the event.

Before the update goes live, the game will undergo scheduled maintenance on March 16 from 4:00 AM to approximately 8:00 AM UTC. Players will need to update to Version 1.5.0 after maintenance concludes in order to continue playing.
Originally launched as a multiplayer party game featuring toy-like versions of Sonic characters competing across chaotic obstacle courses and minigames, Sonic Rumble continues expanding through seasonal updates, new systems, and crossover collaborations.
