Production is officially underway on Sonic the Hedgehog 4, with director Jeff Fowler confirming cameras are rolling and offering the first behind-the-scenes tease of Amy Rose’s full debut in the live-action franchise.

Fowler shared a set photo captioned, “Ready 4 Action. #SonicMovie4 now filming. In Theaters Worldwide March 2027.” The image shows him holding a clapperboard while resting Amy’s iconic Piko Piko Hammer over his shoulder, signaling that the fan-favorite character will play a central role in the upcoming sequel.

Amy, voiced by Kristen Bell, was introduced in the mid-credits scene of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, where she rescued Sonic from a swarm of Metal Sonic robots. Her arrival immediately fueled speculation that the fourth installment could draw inspiration from Sonic the Hedgehog CD, the title that originally introduced both Amy and Metal Sonic.

One detail that stands out from Fowler’s post is the physical construction of Amy’s hammer. Rather than relying entirely on CGI, production has built a practical Piko Piko Hammer prop. Previous films in the series have used tangible stand-ins for key items to help ground performances during live-action shooting. The inclusion of a real prop suggests upcoming action scenes may incorporate practical interaction before visual effects are layered in.

Story details remain tightly guarded. The third film ended with Dr. Ivo Robotnik seemingly destroyed during the Eclipse Cannon explosion. Jim Carrey, who portrayed Robotnik throughout the trilogy, has previously indicated he would consider returning if presented with the right creative direction. With Metal Sonic traditionally tied to Robotnik’s legacy, questions remain about how the sequel will approach that connection.

Returning cast members are expected to include Ben Schwartz as Sonic, James Marsden as Tom Wachowski, Idris Elba as Knuckles, and Colleen O’Shaughnessey as Tails, though additional casting confirmations have yet to be announced.

The Sonic film series has grown into one of Paramount’s most consistent theatrical successes, with each installment outperforming the previous entry at the global box office. With filming now underway and a March 19, 2027 release date set, attention shifts to when audiences might see the first official footage of Amy in action.
