The Blue Blur is about to meet the King of the Monsters.

During IGN Fan Fest 2026, IDW officially unveiled Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla, a new crossover event that pulls Godzilla into Sonic’s universe for a full-scale invasion. Instead of sending Sonic into Godzilla’s world, the story flips the formula, unleashing towering kaiju across Sonic’s dimension.

The miniseries is written by Nick Marino, with art by Jack Lawrence and colors by Reggie Graham. According to IDW’s Sonic editorial team, the crossover has been discussed internally for years, with strong fan demand helping push the project forward in collaboration with SEGA and Toho.

In the story, dimensional disturbances drag Godzilla and other legendary monsters into Sonic’s reality. The destruction spreads across familiar settings, including Green Hill and beyond, forcing Sonic the Hedgehog and his allies to confront a threat defined by overwhelming scale rather than speed.

When the King of the Monsters and other iconic kaiju mysteriously arrive in the Blue Blur’s world, the brilliant and evil Dr. Eggman will try to harness the power of the kaiju for his own nefarious goals. Only Sonic and his amazing allies – including Amy, Tails, Knuckles, and Shadow – will be able to stand in the villain’s way and try to send the giant monsters back to their own world.

One of the key creative inspirations behind the series is Sonic Adventure. Station Square serves as a major reference point for large-scale urban destruction, allowing the creative team to contrast Sonic’s high-speed action with kaiju-level devastation. Marino has also cited Godzilla films such as Godzilla: Tokyo S.O.S., GMK: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, and Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla as tonal influences, pointing toward rotating monster battles and multi-kaiju chaos.

Blending the visual identities of both franchises is central to the project. IDW confirmed that it worked closely with Toho to ensure the kaiju remain faithful to their cinematic roots while adapting naturally into Sonic’s stylized world. The dramatic size difference between Sonic’s fast-moving heroes and city-sized monsters is positioned as a core storytelling element.

Doctor Eggman will also play a pivotal role. Rather than simply reacting to the invasion, Eggman becomes intrigued by one of the invading monsters and sees new potential for his own ambitions. With Knuckles, Amy, Tails, Shadow, and other familiar faces expected to join the fight, the series aims to fully leverage Sonic’s cast while embracing Godzilla’s large-scale destruction.

Sonic the Hedgehog x Godzilla #1 is scheduled to launch in Summer 2026. As Sonic’s 35th anniversary continues and IDW expands its crossover slate, this miniseries is shaping up to be one of the most ambitious comic events of the year.
