SEGA is preparing to discontinue the mobile versions of Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on iOS and Android, signaling the end of these releases under the Sega Forever initiative.
The news surfaced through in-game pop-up notices alerting players that support for the titles will soon end. While SEGA has not announced a specific removal date, the message confirms that both games will eventually be delisted from mobile storefronts.

Originally rebuilt in 2013 by Christian “Taxman” Whitehead and Simon Thomley of Headcannon using the Retro Engine, these versions are widely regarded as definitive ports of Sonic’s first two 2D adventures. Their work later formed the technical foundation for Sonic Mania, making the mobile editions a significant part of Sonic’s modern resurgence.
In a notable development, both titles are currently free to claim. Recent updates have removed ads and in-app purchases from at least the iOS version, meaning players who download them before delisting will retain fully playable copies without ad interruptions. Once removed from storefronts, the games will no longer be available for new downloads, but users who previously claimed them will still be able to play them locally. No further updates will be provided.
The move follows SEGA’s broader strategy of removing several classic titles from digital storefronts across PC and console platforms over the past year. As these mobile versions disappear, official access to certain legacy Sonic releases continues to narrow outside of compilation releases such as Sonic Origins.
For longtime fans and new players alike, this may represent the final opportunity to download these enhanced mobile editions of Sonic’s earliest adventures at no cost.
