A brand-new IDW Sonic the Hedgehog one-shot celebrating the franchise’s 35th anniversary has surfaced via Edelweiss Plus, a publishing industry catalog platform, offering an early glimpse at what appears to be a major Classic-era comic event.
Titled Sonic the Hedgehog: 35th Anniversary Special – Deluxe Edition, the hardcover release is currently listed with a December 15, 2026 on-sale date. As with many catalog listings, the date may serve as a placeholder and could change once officially announced.
According to the description, the story follows Classic Sonic and friends as they investigate a mysterious meteor that crash-lands on the planet with the power to create life. The situation escalates when Doctor Eggman steals the meteor and uses it to power up Metal Sonic, who then turns on everything with a plan to destroy all life.
To prevent catastrophe, Sonic the Hedgehog teams up with a lineup of Classic-era fan favorites, including Mighty the Armadillo, Ray the Flying Squirrel, Fang the Sniper, Bean the Dynamite, and Bark the Polar Bear. The special is described as a throwback-style adventure bringing together characters who have seen renewed attention in recent games and comics.
