Paramount Pictures may not be done with Dr. Ivo Robotnik just yet.

According to industry insider Daniel Richtman, Paramount is currently in discussions with Jim Carrey about returning once again as Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 4. The update was shared via Richtman’s Patreon, noting that talks are underway despite many assuming Carrey’s time with the franchise had come to an end.

In case you thought he was done, Paramount is talking to Jim Carrey about returning for Sonic 4.

Carrey’s take on Robotnik has been central to the live-action Sonic films since the beginning, with the character serving as the primary antagonist in every entry so far. While Sonic the Hedgehog 3 appeared to give Robotnik a definitive send-off, Paramount has never formally confirmed the character’s death, leaving room for a return if the story calls for it.

Carrey previously stepped back from acting after Sonic the Hedgehog 2, before ultimately reprising the role for the third film. Carrey has already shared his openness to returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, emphasizing that his decision would depend on the creative team’s vision and praised the fanbase’s energy and ideas. If negotiations move forward, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 would mark Carrey’s fourth consecutive appearance in the franchise.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is currently scheduled for release on March 19, 2027. Paramount has already confirmed the introduction of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic, following their tease in Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s post-credits scene. Beyond those confirmations, no official plot details have been revealed.

As of now, Paramount has not publicly commented on Jim Carrey’s involvement or Robotnik’s role in the film.
